Intermittent Hypoxic Training (IHT) broadly encompasses all training methods that combine “sea level + simulated altitude,” but in the narrow sense it often refers to the altitude tent / hypoxic tent: a tent set up over the bed, with nitrogen used inside to control the oxygen ratio, simulating an environment of 2,500–4,000 m. This article breaks down its principles, effective dosage, and key purchasing considerations.
Principles: Hypoxic Generator + Enclosed Space
The hypoxic generator uses molecular sieves (PSA, Pressure Swing Adsorption) to separate nitrogen and oxygen from the air, reducing oxygen concentration from 21% to 13–15% (equivalent to 2,500–4,000 m). The gas is delivered through tubing into the tent, where the user sleeps or rests inside.

- Hypoxic generator (main unit, roughly refrigerator-sized)
- Tent (multi-person or single-person model)

- Safety alarms (CO₂ accumulation alarm, hypoxia alarm)

- A partner cannot use it together unless inside the tent
- Lacks the environmental stimuli of real altitude (sunlight, terrain)
- Some international sports federations (e.g., Norway) view it as “artificial enhancement,” raising Olympic ethics debates
Monitoring Indicators
- Measure hemoglobin (Hb) and hematocrit (Hct) weekly
- Measure resting heart rate (RHR) and SpO₂ daily
- Training power, pace, and perceived exertion
- Sleep quality (tracked with a smart wearable device)
- Ferritin (supplement iron if necessary)
Side Effects and Precautions
- Sleep disturbance: Common in the first 1–2 weeks; some people experience Cheyne-Stokes respiration
- Headache: Common on the first night; ibuprofen can be given
- CO₂ accumulation: The tent is sealed; confirm ventilation and CO₂ alarm
- Worsened insomnia: Use with caution if you already have insomnia
- Drug interactions: Consult a physician if taking certain diuretics or cardiovascular medications
Current Status in Taiwan
- Few athletes own one personally; a small number of national teams and pro teams have the equipment
- Some high-end training centers in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung offer rental or camp use
- Imported brands: Hypoxico (US), AltitudeTech (NZ)
Practical Recommendations
- Start 8 weeks before the target race: 4 weeks of adaptation + 4 weeks of main training
- Start at 2,500 m equivalent: increase by 200 m every 4–5 days, up to a maximum of 3,500 m
- Combine with iron supplementation: start 4 weeks before use; ferritin >50 ng/mL
- At least 5 nights per week: less than this reduces the effect
- Watch your sleep in the first week: if you sleep poorly, don’t push through—first lower the altitude by 200 m
- Do not use the altitude tent the week before a race: give your body a few days to return to normoxia and stabilize
Conclusion
