Bike Fitting: The Complete Guide — Why You Need a Professional Fit

裝備介紹

What Is Bike Fitting?

Bike fitting is the process of precisely adjusting every part of your bicycle based on your body dimensions, flexibility, riding goals, and injury history. A good fit can:

  1. Eliminate pain: knee pain, lower back pain, neck pain, hand numbness
  2. Improve efficiency: correct posture lets you ride faster with less effort
  3. Prevent injury: avoid chronic damage caused by long-term riding
  4. Increase comfort: make long-distance rides much easier

Which Parts of the Bike Does a Fit Adjust?

Saddle Height

  • Determines pedaling efficiency and knee health
  • Too high: pelvis rocks side to side, hamstrings overstretch
  • Too low: increased knee pressure, power loss
  • Rule of thumb: knee should bend about 25-30 degrees at the bottom of the pedal stroke

Saddle Fore/Aft Position

  • Affects knee load and pedaling angle
  • KOPS principle (Knee Over Pedal Spindle): with the pedal at the 3 o’clock position, the knee should sit directly above the pedal axle
  • This is only a starting point — it needs to be adjusted for the individual

Saddle Tilt

  • Level is the starting point
  • A slight forward tilt of 1-2 degrees is usually more comfortable
  • Too much tilt causes sliding forward or perineal pressure

Handlebar Height and Distance (Reach & Stack)

  • Determines upper body posture
  • Affects aerodynamics and comfort
  • Riders with less flexibility need a higher handlebar

Stem Length and Angle

  • A key tool for fine-tuning reach
  • Common lengths: 80-120mm
  • Angle can be positive or negative (angled up or down)

Brake/Shift Lever Angle

  • Wrists should rest naturally without excessive bending
  • Affects hand comfort on long rides

Cleat Position

  • Affects pedaling efficiency and knee health
  • Fore/aft: align the ball of the foot with the pedal axle
  • Rotational angle: based on the natural angle of the foot when standing

Types of Bike Fitting

Basic Fitting (NT$1,000-3,000)

  • 30-60 minutes
  • Basic saddle and handlebar adjustments
  • A good entry-level option for beginners

Advanced Fitting (NT$3,000-6,000)

  • 1.5-2.5 hours
  • Uses laser or video analysis
  • Includes flexibility and strength assessment
  • Suited to riders training seriously

Professional Fitting (NT$6,000-12,000)

  • 2-4 hours
  • Uses a motion-capture system (such as Retul)
  • 3D dynamic analysis
  • Multiple test rides and fine-tuning
  • Suited to competitive riders or those with chronic pain

When Do You Need a Fit?

  • When buying a new bike
  • When you keep feeling pain after riding
  • When returning to riding after an injury
  • When you want to improve performance
  • When your riding goals change (e.g. moving from recreational riding to racing)

Flagship stores of major bike brands typically offer fitting services:

  • Specialized concept stores (Retul system)
  • Trek flagship stores
  • Giant Fitting Centers
  • Independent professional fitting studios

Basic DIY Adjustments

If a professional fit isn’t available right away, here are some basic adjustments you can do yourself:

  1. Saddle height: stand on the pedal — your heel should just touch the pedal at its lowest point
  2. Saddle fore/aft: sit on the bike with the pedal at the 3 o’clock position — your knee should align with the pedal axle
  3. Handlebar height: beginners should set the handlebar level with the saddle; more advanced riders can gradually lower it
  4. Test ride for 30 minutes: pay attention to any discomfort
