Mount Xue Main Peak Climbing Case Study: Common Risk Scenarios at 3,886 Meters

健康與醫學

Introduction

Snow Mountain Main Peak (3,886 m) is one of the most popular “approachable high peaks” among Taiwan’s Hundred Peaks. The standard three-day, two-night route (Qika Lodge → 369 Lodge → Snow Mountain Main Peak) is more relaxed than the Yushan itinerary, with an AMS incidence rate of about 15–25%. However, Snow Mountain has its own unique risk scenarios: hypothermia in the Black Forest, nighttime wind chill at 369 Lodge, the wind gap near the summit, and ice and snow in winter. This article discusses common risks through typical case studies.

Standard Itinerary Altitude Profile

Day Section Altitude Change Assessment
1 Wuling → Qika (2,463 m) +600 m Safe
2 Qika → 369 (3,150 m) +700 m Near upper limit
3 369 → Main Peak (3,886 m) and back to 369 +736 m -736 m Near upper limit
3 369 → Wuling Descent 1,400 m Watch for fatigue

Case 1: Insomnia and AMS at 369 Lodge

Scenario: On the second night at 369 (3,150 m), a climber wakes at 2:00 AM with a headache and cannot sleep, LLS score 5.

Management:

  • First administer ibuprofen 400 mg and rehydrate
  • Observe for 6 hours; if LLS rises above 6 → abandon summit attempt and descend to Qika
  • If LLS drops below 3 → summit attempt may be considered, but keep the option to descend

Lesson: Sleep quality at 369 is a key predictor of summit-day capability. Team members with insomnia plus headache should seriously consider abandoning the summit attempt.

Case 2: Hypothermia in the Black Forest Section

Scenario: In March with residual winter snow, on the Black Forest section (3,200–3,400 m), an afternoon of overcast skies and drizzle finds a team member underdressed. After 2 hours, shivering and unsteady gait appear.

Recognition:

  • Ataxia plus hypothermia symptoms look similar and are easily misjudged
  • Distinction: hypothermic individuals have cold extremities and core temperature <35°C; those with HACE may have normal extremities but a history of headache

Management:

  • Immediately get out of the wind and precipitation (Black Forest canopy or tent)
  • Change into dry clothing, provide calories (hot drinks, chocolate)
  • If core temperature recovers and ataxia improves → primarily hypothermia
  • If still ataxic after rewarming → consider HACE, descend immediately plus dexamethasone

Case 3: The Wind Gap on Snow Mountain Main Peak

Scenario: There is a wind gap at approximately 3,800 m above the main peak. In autumn and winter, wind speeds can reach 50 km/h with an extremely low wind chill.

Specific risks:

  • Wind chill exacerbates HAPE: cold amplifies pulmonary vasoconstriction
  • AMS patients deplete energy rapidly in strong winds
  • Limited visibility affects route-finding

Recommendations:

  • Check the Central Weather Bureau mountain forecast and on-site wind speed at 369 Lodge before departure
  • Carry a hard shell plus down layer for two-layer insulation
  • Rope up front and back within the team, watching each other
  • If already feeling unwell at the wind gap, the remaining 200 m to the summit is not worth the risk

Case 4: The Added Risk of the Cuichi Traverse

Scenario: Some climbers continue from Snow Mountain Main Peak to Cuichi (3,520 m) for the night, then return to 369 or descend via Zhijiayang.

Risks:

  • Three consecutive nights above 3,000 m, with cumulative AMS risk
  • Cuichi has limited supplies and emergency resources are farther away
  • Two consecutive days at high altitude increase the probability of HACE/HAPE

Recommendations:

  • The team should have basic high-altitude medicine training
  • Carry dexamethasone, acetazolamide, and nifedipine
  • At least one satellite phone or radio
  • One week before departure, confirm no team member has an upper respiratory infection

Medical Optimization for the Three-Day Snow Mountain Itinerary

Improvement Details
Time at Qika Arrive early + sleep early, depart at 06:00 the next day for 369
Acclimatization day at 369 After arrival, take a light walk to Snow Mountain East Peak (3,201 m) and return to 369
Summit time Depart at 03:00, reach the main peak before 08:00
Descent buffer Stay one more night at 369, descend to Wuling on day four (if leave permits)

Practical Recommendations

  • Don’t sleep too early on the first night at Qika: Moderate activity aids acute acclimatization
  • Stay warm at night at 369 Lodge: The temperature difference between inside and outside the hut is large; watch for hypothermia
  • Carry a hot meal for the summit round trip: A refueling stop in the Black Forest section
  • Add crampons and a climbing helmet in winter: Terrain risks far outweigh AMS
  • Monitor for upper respiratory infections one week before departure: Don’t push through a lingering cold
  • Observe for 24 hours after descending: Rare cases of delayed pulmonary edema

Conclusion

Snow Mountain has a more relaxed itinerary than Yushan, but its risk scenarios are more diverse (Black Forest, wind gap, Cuichi traverse). Keep the recognition points from each case in mind, and Taiwan’s mountain enthusiasts can enjoy Snow Mountain’s layered beauty without paying a health price. In the next article, we will discuss the one-day lightweight strategy for the Hehuan peaks.
