Introduction

Cycling speeds in a bike leg typically range from 30–40 km/h, and aerodynamic drag is the biggest enemy. A 20 km sprint may seem short, but proper positioning can make a 1–3 minute difference. This article breaks it down from three angles: equipment, fit, and body position.

If the sprint course has many corners, a road bike may actually come out ahead. It is recommended to start with a road bike plus clip-on aero bars.

Aero Bar Adjustment

Aero bars are the highest value-for-money aerodynamic upgrade:

  • Height: elbow pads should sit 5–10 cm lower than the saddle
  • Length: distance from elbow pad to bar tip = forearm length
  • Angle: bar ends tilted up 10–15 degrees for easy gripping
  • Elbow width: inner distance between elbow pads 18–22 cm (depending on shoulder width)

A poorly adjusted aero bar not only provides no benefit but can also strain the neck and lower back.

Three Key Points of Body Position

  1. Head low: eyes looking 10 meters ahead, chin slightly tucked
  2. Flat back: back tilted 30–45 degrees, neither arched nor sagging
  3. Elbows tucked in: elbows narrower than shoulders—the narrower, the better, saving 8–12 watts

With correct positioning, frontal area (CdA) can drop from 0.32 on a road bike to 0.24 m², which translates to 1.5 km/h faster at the same power.

Aerodynamic Clothing Ranking

  • Helmet: TT helmet > road helmet, saves 30–60 seconds
  • Kit: one-piece trisuit > two-piece, saves 10–20 seconds
  • Socks: aero socks < no socks < regular socks (no significant difference—prioritize comfort)
  • Wheels: 50mm deep-section wheels > standard wheels (disc wheels not recommended on windy days)

Cornering Technique

Sprint races are mostly on loop courses, so smooth cornering > straight-line speed:

  • Brake to a controllable speed before entering the corner
  • Inside pedal up, outside pedal down, with heavy pressure on the outside pedal
  • Look toward the corner exit
  • Only accelerate hard after exiting the corner

Practical Advice

  • Don’t buy a full set of aero gear just for a sprint—it offers the lowest value for money
  • Wind tunnel testing is expensive; in Taiwan, use TrainerRoad / Best Bike Split for simulation instead
  • At the same power, a 1 cm difference in elbow height costs 10 watts
  • Get a bike fit at least once a year, as your body changes with flexibility and training
  • Before cornering, check the road surface for oil stains and gravel

With the same training volume and the same leg strength, a well-positioned athlete is 3–5% faster, which is like getting a free minute.
