Introduction
Amateur athletes often overlook transitions, but for elite athletes, the combined T1+T2 time is about 1-2 minutes, while amateurs often take 5-8 minutes. If your goal is a sub-3 sprint triathlon, the 2 minutes saved in transitions could be the key to a PB. This article breaks down the complete T1/T2 process.
1. Complete T1 Process (Swim → Bike)
Starting from the moment you exit the water:
- Unzip the upper half of the wetsuit while running (if permitted)
- Remove goggles and swim cap upon entering the transition area (tuck them into the wetsuit glove-style)
- Grab the lower half of the wetsuit and stomp it down to the ankles
- Grab your bike and put on your helmet first (mandatory) and buckle the chin strap
- Push the bike to the mount line before getting on
- Put on cycling shoes after mounting (shoes pre-clipped onto the pedals)
2. Complete T2 Process (Bike → Run)
Start preparing 200m before dismounting:
- Slip your feet out and rest them on top of the cycling shoes, coasting to the dismount line
- Dismount and push the bike back to the transition area (riding is not allowed)
- Hang the bike back on the rack
- Remove the helmet and put on running shoes (elastic laces)
- Put on a cap or sunglasses
- Exit the transition area and start running
3. Transition Area Setup SOP
Design your setup position the day before the race:
| Item | Position | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bike | On the rack | Gears set to mid-range |
| Helmet | On the handlebars | Straps opened |
| Cycling shoes | On the pedals | Secured with rubber bands |
| Running shoes | On the mat | Elastic laces, talcum powder |
| Cap | Inside running shoes | Folded and placed inside |
4. Most Common Amateur Mistakes
Avoid these penalty points:
- Pushing the bike before putting on the helmet (officials may issue a warning or time penalty)
- Wearing socks (not recommended for sprint triathlon, saves 30 seconds)
- Incorrect mount/dismount line positioning (mount/dismount line violation)
- Failed pre-clipped cycling shoes (just get off and put them on if riding becomes unstable)
- Can’t find the bike in the transition area (finding your spot marker is crucial)
Practical Tips
- Practice the complete T1/T2 process 10 times at home before the race
- Invest in elastic laces and talcum powder to save time putting on shoes
- Fulong and Kenting have larger transition areas; running in and out can be 200-300m
- Record your T1/T2 times for every race and improve race by race
Conclusion
Transitions are the discipline where “you can improve without expending energy.” Saving 2 minutes in a sprint triathlon is equivalent to improving your run pace by 12 seconds/km. We recommend training transitions as the fourth discipline.
