Introduction
The first leg of a 70.3 is the 1.9 km swim, which looks the shortest but is often the most anxiety-inducing discipline for age-group athletes. It tests not just speed, but also sighting, crowd congestion, current adaptation, and mental stability. This article provides a progressive training framework for Taiwanese triathletes, from the pool to open water.
The Three Pillars of Training
| Pillar | Goal | Example Session |
|---|---|---|
| Technique | Improve propulsion efficiency per stroke | 6×100 catch-up drill + 6×100 fingertip drag |
| Aerobic | Improve lactate threshold pace | 10×100 @ T-pace, 20" rest intervals |
| Distance Adaptation | Remove fear of 1.9 km | 30×100 continuous swim, or 2×1500 continuous swim |
Progressive Distance Structure
Using pool training as an example, a 6-week plan to build up to 1.9 km:
- W1–W2: Main set of 1500 m per session, broken into 6×250 or 15×100
- W3–W4: Main set of 1800 m per session, with sighting drills (look up every 6 strokes)
- W5: Continuous 2000 m time trial, record split paces
- W6: Open water 1.9–2.2 km, including buoy-turn practice
4 Key Points for Open Water
- Sighting: Look up every 4–8 strokes; eyes first out of the water, then breathe
- Avoiding pack congestion: Pick a side (left/right) after the start to avoid the core collision zone
- Swimming straight: Choose a fixed landmark in the distance rather than the buoy (buoys are too close and cause deviation)
- With/against the current: Kenting currents can be lateral at times; adjust sighting frequency based on buoy position
Perceived Effort Pace Zones
- Z2 aerobic (easy): Breathe every 3 strokes, able to hold a conversation
- Z3 tempo: Breathe every 2 strokes, able to speak short phrases
- Z4 LT: Breathe every 2 strokes, unable to speak; 1.9 km race pace should fall in the lower end of this zone
Practical Advice
- At least 1 main set over 2000 m per week (during the build phase and beyond)
- At least 2 open water sessions in the 4 weeks before race day, including wearing a wetsuit
- Use breathing rhythm (3-3-2-2 or 3-2-3-2) to stabilize heart rate
- Swim the first 200 m of the race at 80% effort to avoid a heart-rate spike and “blowing up”
Conclusion
The goal of the 70.3 swim is never to set a record, but to “reach shore with a stable heart rate, saving energy for the 90 km bike.” Balancing technique, aerobic fitness, and open water skills, plus on-site adaptation to the Kenting waters, will make the 1.9 km no longer the leg that keeps you up at night.
