Basketball High School Team Conditioning Plan: A Year-Round Conditioning Blueprint for HBL Players

單車訓練

Introduction

Taiwan’s HBL is the highest level of high school basketball. With a long season and a dense schedule, many teams focus only on skill training while neglecting physical conditioning planning, causing them to collectively lose steam during the quarterfinals. This article provides high school coaches with a year-round physical conditioning blueprint based on NSCA periodization principles.

Year-Round Periodization Breakdown

Phase Months Training Focus
Summer Training Jul-Aug Strength foundation, aerobic foundation
Pre-Season Sep-Oct Explosiveness, agility, game simulation
Preliminary Rounds Nov-Dec Strength maintenance, skill refinement
Quarterfinals Jan-Feb Tapering and recovery, mental preparation
Finals Mar Maintenance, mental, tactics

Summer Training Focus

  • 4 strength training sessions per week (2 lower body, 2 upper body)
  • 2 HIIT conditioning sessions per week
  • 3 skill training sessions per week
  • Fitness testing: vertical jump, 5-10-5, Yo-Yo Test

Pre-Season Focus

  • Strength training reduced to 3 sessions per week, adding explosive work
  • 2 scrimmage games per week
  • Add SAQ agility training
  • Begin establishing shooting rhythm

In-Season Focus

  • 1-2 strength maintenance sessions per week
  • Training sessions capped at 30-40 minutes
  • Prioritize recovery (sleep, nutrition)
  • No heavy lifting within 48 hours after games

Quarterfinals to Finals

  • Reduce volume across the board, focus on maintaining form
  • Mental preparation is the top priority
  • Training volume reduced to 60% of in-season levels
  • Lights out by 9 PM the night before games, at least 8 hours of sleep

Practical Recommendations

  • During high school growth spurts, movement quality in strength training far outweighs load
  • 1RM testing is not recommended for high schoolers; stick to 3-5RM
  • Summer training must not be all basketball—strength work is mandatory
  • Open division and men’s division differ greatly; training plans should be split by group
  • Conduct body composition testing monthly to track progress

Conclusion

HBL is a long campaign—the March finals actually start being prepared for in July. With a well-structured year-round periodization plan, players won’t lose steam at the critical moment. If Taiwanese high school coaches adopt the NSCA approach to year-round planning, HBL’s competitiveness will move closer to international standards.
