Speed Development for Shorter Basketball Players: Surviving in the P-League at 175 cm

單車訓練

Introduction

Taiwanese players tend to be smaller in stature, with the average height of the men’s basketball team falling below that of many Asian countries. However, as long as shorter players have enough speed and a clear mind, they can still establish themselves in the P-League. This article provides speed and conditioning training directions for players under 180 cm.

Advantages of Shorter Players

  • Lower center of gravity, naturally stronger agility
  • Usually faster initial acceleration
  • Defensive advantage in terms of center of gravity when matching up
  • Easier to control body fat percentage

Abilities That Must Be Strengthened

  • First-step acceleration (0-3 meters)
  • Change-of-direction deceleration and re-acceleration
  • Shooting range and consistency
  • Court vision and game reading
  • Conditioning endurance

Speed Development Program

First-Step Acceleration

  • Reaction start: 5-meter sprint on whistle ×8
  • Standing start: alternating left/right foot starts over 5 meters ×6
  • Resisted sprint: resistance band added ×6

Change-of-Direction Acceleration

  • 5-10-5 shuttle variation ×4 sets
  • W-drill ×3 sets
  • Inside drive with change of direction + layup ×8

Reaction Speed

  • Mirror drill ×3 minutes
  • Reaction cone ×8
  • 1-on-1 defensive reaction ×5 minutes

Integrated Conditioning Training

  • Weight control: recommended body fat 8-10%
  • Cardio: HIIT twice per week
  • Strength: focus on relative strength (back squat 1.8-2× body weight)
  • Jumping: CMJ 70+ cm target

Game Application

  • Driving: use change of direction to shake off taller defenders
  • Defense: stay low, use speed to get steals
  • Three-point shooting: train outside shooting percentage
  • Assists: use speed to create space

Practical Advice

  • Shorter players must shoot 40%+ from the field
  • Free throws must be consistent (85%+)
  • Training must include “quick decision-making” elements
  • On defense, learn to use height differences to create steals
  • Maintaining your body type matters more than gaining strength

Conclusion

Lin Chih-chieh, Chen Ying-chun, and Su Yi-chieh are all 188-193 cm, but among players with smaller builds, speed and skill are what allow them to stand on Asia’s top stages. Push your speed to the limit, make your shooting rock-solid, and shorter players can still earn their place in HBL, UBA, and the P-League.
