Pick & Roll Basics: Four Defensive Reads

單車訓練

Introduction

NBA statistics: Pick & Roll accounts for approximately 28% of total offensive possessions, making it the most frequently used tactic. Steve Nash, Chris Paul, Tony Parker, and Luka Dončić all dominated the league with the pick & roll. Pick & Roll looks simple, but it has countless variations. This article breaks down the four main options from the perspective of reading the defensive reaction.

1. Pick & Roll Basic Flow

Standard Pick & Roll:

  1. The ball handler brings the ball to one side
  2. The screener sets a screen on the outside of the defender
  3. The handler cuts off the screen on the high side
  4. The screener rolls (dives to the basket) or pops (steps out) depending on the situation

The key isn’t the movement itself, but how the handler reads the reactions of both defenders.

2. Four Read-and-React Options Comparison

Defensive Reaction Handler’s Option Example Player
Drop (rim protector retreats) Pull-up mid-range Chris Paul
Switch Attack the mismatch Luka Dončić
Hedge / Show (rim protector steps up to pressure) Pass to the roller Steve Nash
Blitz / Trap (double team) Pass to the 4-on-3 teammate LeBron James

3. Solving Drop Defense

Drop is the modern mainstream defense: the rim protector retreats behind the free-throw line, while the on-ball defender chases over the screen.

Handler options:

  • Pull-up jumper: rise up for a jump shot near the free-throw line
  • Floater: shoot over the retreating defender
  • Lob to roller: when the rim protector is too far from the paint, throw an alley-oop to the roller

In the 2024 NBA Playoffs, Jamal Murray’s clutch shots against the Lakers were mostly solved with pull-ups against the drop.

4. Solving Switch Defense

After a switch, a mismatch appears: typically small-on-big (big defender switched onto the perimeter) or big-on-small (small defender switched into the post).

  • Small vs. Big: the handler attacks directly in face-up isolation, using a crossover or step-back
  • Big vs. Small: the roller seals deep in the post and receives a high-arc entry pass

Luka Dončić and Kevin Durant are the prime examples of exploiting switch mismatches.

5. Solving Hedge and Blitz

Hedge: the rim protector briefly steps up to pressure, then retreats. Blitz: an immediate double team.

How to handle it:

  • Pass out immediately to the roller or an open shooter
  • Create a 4-on-3 offensive advantage, with the roller as the “short-corner hub”
  • After catching the ball, the roller can choose: pass to an open shooter, attack the rim, or kick it back out to reset

Practical Advice

  • Two-man drills: handler and screener run 30 pick & rolls, alternating positions
  • Coaches simulate different defensive reactions so the handler practices reading the defense
  • Add a third player (shooter on the weak side opposite the roller) to practice the “pass out” decision
  • Game film analysis: did you choose a pull-up or a pass? Did it match the defensive reaction?
  • Watch CP3 film to learn the habit of “always look at the roller first after the screen”

Conclusion

Pick & Roll is not a fixed play—it’s a decision-making process of reading the defense and choosing. Once you learn how to counter Drop, Switch, Hedge, and Blitz, the pick & roll becomes your all-purpose weapon.
