Triangle Offense: Phil Jackson's Championship Formula

單車訓練

Introduction

Phil Jackson led the Bulls (Jordan) and the Lakers (Kobe, Shaq) to 11 NBA championships, and the engine behind it all was the Triangle offense. Designed by Tex Winter, the Triangle has three players form a triangle shape, combining movement and reading the defense to create countless options. This article breaks down this classic system.

1. The Basic Formation of the Triangle

The standard triangle:

  • Three players on the strong side: post, wing, corner (forming a triangle)
  • Two players on the weak side: weak-side wing, top of the key

The three points of the triangle:

  • Post: the center’s position, the axis of the offense
  • Wing: the extension of the free-throw line
  • Corner: the baseline corner

2. The Core Principles of the Triangle

Tex Winter’s seven principles:

  1. Spacing of 4-5 meters
  2. Penetration takes priority
  3. Two-man options
  4. Strong rebounding position
  5. Defensive balance
  6. Ball reversal
  7. Movement with purpose

3. The Main Options of the Triangle

Starting from a catch in the post, there are at least 7 options:

Option Action Trigger Condition
Post-up Isolation in the post Mismatch
Pass to wing Pass to wing for a three-point shot Wing is open
Pass to corner Pass to corner Corner is open
Two-man game Pick-and-roll with the wing Defense over-commits to the post
Splitter Backdoor cut by the opposite player Defense relaxes
Pinch post High-post relief pass Strong side gets double-teamed
Reverse Ball swings to the weak side No opening on the strong side

4. Why the Triangle Was Especially Effective for Jordan and Kobe

The Triangle is designed for players who “can attack from the post, wing, and corner simultaneously.” Jordan and Kobe were a perfect fit:

  • Strong post-up game
  • Strong wing pull-up jumper
  • Strong finishing at the rim
  • Able to score one-on-one or distribute from all three spots

This is also why the Triangle was so hard to replicate with the Knicks (built around Anthony) or the later-era Lakers (built around LeBron).

5. Advantages and Disadvantages of the Triangle

Advantages:

  • Decision-making is distributed among many players, making it hard to predict
  • Well-suited to a strong isolation scorer
  • Excellent spacing on offense
  • Easy defensive rebounding and transition defense

Disadvantages:

  • Extremely long learning curve (players typically need two seasons to adapt)
  • Not well-suited to the three-point era (the Triangle was designed before the three-pointer became prevalent)
  • Requires versatile, all-around players
  • The center must be able to pass

6. The Evolution of the Triangle in the Modern Game

The pure Triangle is now rarely seen, but its principles still influence today’s game:

  • 5-out offense: spacing similar to the Triangle
  • Princeton: reading principles similar to the Triangle
  • Read & React: systematizes the Triangle’s decision-making logic

Practical Tips

  • Start learning the Triangle from the “3-man weakside” concept
  • Practice all 7 options, at least 30 reps each
  • Coaches should teach spacing principles first, then add movement
  • Watch the 1996 Bulls and 2001 Lakers to see how Jordan and Kobe read defenses
  • Don’t force a rigid copy of the Triangle — absorb its principles into your own system

Conclusion

The Triangle offense is not a handful of set plays, but a philosophy of “reading and choosing.” Although it is rarely run in its pure form today, its principles of spacing, movement, and coordination have shaped virtually every top offensive system in the modern game.
