Introduction
Many MTB beginners get a new bike and never adjust the fork pressure, riding for half a year without touching it. The result is either pressure too high with no road feel at all, or pressure too low causing bottom-outs and poor handling. Setting the fork’s air chamber pressure is the first step in tuning your suspension system. Spend five minutes doing it right, and the entire riding experience will be night and day different.
Basic Concepts: Air Chamber Pressure and SAG
MTB air forks rely on compressed air to provide rebound force. SAG refers to the percentage of fork travel compressed by the rider’s weight once seated and in riding position, usually expressed as a percentage of total travel.
- XC fork recommended SAG: 15–20%
- Trail fork recommended SAG: 20–25%
- Enduro fork recommended SAG: 25–30%
Why not aim for as stiff as possible? Proper SAG ensures the fork still has upward compression room when hitting impacts. Otherwise, the fork constantly works in the upper half of its travel and will bottom out directly on big rocks.
Setup Steps
Step 1: Reset the O-ring
Push the rubber O-ring on the fork (or the indicator line) down to near the seal. This is your visual SAG indicator.
Step 2: Inflate to the Recommended Initial Pressure
Most brands print a rider-weight-to-pressure chart on the fork leg. Using the Fox 34 as an example:
| Rider Weight (with gear) | Recommended Initial Pressure |
|---|---|
| 55–65 kg | 55–70 psi |
| 65–75 kg | 70–85 psi |
| 75–85 kg | 85–100 psi |
| 85–95 kg | 100–115 psi |
Step 3: Static SAG Measurement
Wear full protective gear, carry your riding pack, step onto the pedals and take a normal riding position (slight crouch). Have a friend hold the bike steady, measure the O-ring displacement with a ruler, and convert it to a percentage of travel.
Step 4: Dynamic Adjustment
Ride a short familiar section of trail, then check the O-ring position when you return:
- O-ring only moved less than 50% of travel: pressure may be too high, prone to harsh bottom-out feel on big impacts
- O-ring exceeded 90% of travel: pressure too low, needs more air
- Ideal state: after a ride, the O-ring sits at 80–90% of travel
Air Chamber Adjustment Details
Main Chamber vs. Positive Air Chamber
Some high-end forks (such as Fox 34/36 Factory, RockShox Pike Ultimate) feature separate Positive and Negative air chambers. Higher negative chamber pressure makes the initial stroke more sensitive; higher positive chamber pressure provides stronger mid-to-end stroke support. Brands usually ship with a balanced setup, so general users only need to adjust the main chamber.
Volume Spacer
If your fork has severe bottom-out issues, or you feel the mid-to-end stroke support is insufficient, you can add a Volume Spacer. This small spacer reduces the air chamber volume, making the pressure curve steeper and providing stronger end-of-travel resistance.
Practical Tips
- Check pressure with a dedicated shock pump before every ride; regular floor pumps are not precise enough
- Taiwan’s summer heat raises air pressure slightly; re-check after winter cold snaps
- Adjust for terrain: weekday trail riding vs. weekend technical routes can differ by 5–10 psi
- Log your settings in your phone’s notes app so you have a baseline to return to when switching routes
Conclusion
Fork pressure is not a “set it and forget it” matter. Re-check it monthly, or whenever your weight changes or you switch terrain. Correct SAG keeps the fork operating within its optimal working range, and your handling, fatigue level, and confidence will all improve dramatically.
