Improper rear shock setup not only affects comfort but can also cause unsettling posture changes when cornering. Basic Types of Rear Shocks

Modern MTB rear shocks are divided into two main categories: air shocks and coil shocks:

Rear shock SAG recommendations are similar to forks, but usually slightly higher, because the rear shock needs to handle more dynamic load from rider weight transfer:

  • XC Rear Shock: 20–25%
  • Trail Rear Shock: 25–30%
  • Enduro Rear Shock: 30–35%

Air Rear Shock SAG Adjustment Steps

Step 1: Confirm Shock Stroke

Check the label on the rear shock body or the bike manufacturer’s spec sheet to confirm the stroke length (e.g., 55mm, 57.5mm, 65mm).

Step 2: Reset the O-Ring

Ensure the O-ring on the rear shock shaft is at its initial position (near the seal).

Step 3: Static SAG Measurement

Wearing your complete riding gear (including backpack), sit on the bike in a standard riding position:

  1. Place both feet on the pedals, adopting a neutral riding posture.
  2. Have someone record the distance the O-ring moves.
  3. Calculate SAG percentage: Distance Moved ÷ Total Stroke × 100% = SAG Percentage

Example: Rear shock stroke 55mm, O-ring moves 16mm → SAG = 29%, which meets the recommended value for a Trail bike.

Step 4: Fine-Tuning Pressure

Every increase or decrease of 10 psi affects SAG by approximately 2–3%. It is recommended to adjust by 5 psi at a time, re-measure, and repeat until the target value is reached.

Coil Rear Shock SAG Adjustment

Coil shock SAG is adjusted via the preload collar:

  • Tighten the preload collar clockwise → Decreases SAG (stiffer)
  • Loosen the preload collar counterclockwise → Increases SAG (softer)

If the adjustment range is insufficient, it means the spring rate does not match your weight, and the spring needs to be replaced. A general rule is: the preload collar should be in a middle position (3–4 turns) when the recommended SAG is just reached, leaving room for positive and negative adjustment.

Dynamic Feel Adjustment

The SAG number is the starting point; dynamic feel is the end goal. Here are common issues and adjustment directions:

  • Excessive rear-end squatting sensation when cornering: SAG is too high, increase pressure appropriately.
  • Ride feels too harsh, all small gravel vibrations transmitted to the lower back: SAG is too low, decrease pressure appropriately.
  • Rear wheel slips during initial acceleration: Insufficient traction, consider increasing SAG or adjusting LSC (Low-Speed Compression damping).
  • Rear shock continues to pack down on long descents: SAG is too high or LSR (Low-Speed Rebound) is too fast.

Practical Advice

  • After each adjustment, test ride on the same familiar section of trail to establish a sense of comparison.
  • Finalize your settings one week before an important race; do not make drastic adjustments on the spot.
  • Enduro routes in Taiwan often feature numerous roots and rocks; a slightly softer SAG setting (30–33%) is recommended.
  • Record your settings and take a photo (pressure gauge + O-ring position) for quick restoration next time.
