  2. Shift your weight back: Push your hips rearward, sometimes even behind the saddle
  3. Feather both brakes simultaneously: About 50/50, keeping the wheels rolling
  4. Look 3–5 meters ahead: Don’t stare at the ground right in front of you
  5. Brake lever force: About 30–40% of maximum force, leaving margin

Common Mistakes

  • Relying only on the rear brake: Poor speed control, leaving you helpless in sharp corners
  • Clamping the front brake continuously: Front-wheel lockup and loss of control is the most dangerous mistake in MTB
  • Braking hard mid-corner: Deceleration should be completed before corner entry; mid-corner, use only the rear brake for fine adjustments
  • Incorrect brake finger position: Use only your index finger to operate the brake, keep the other fingers gripping the handlebar — never wrap all four fingers around the lever

Brake Hardware Setup

  • Brake lever position: Adjust so the first knuckle of your index finger rests comfortably on the lever end without needing to lift your wrist
  • Lever travel: There should still be 1–1.5cm of clearance before the lever bottoms out; if it pulls all the way to the bar, adjustment is needed
  • Rotor size: 180–203mm front, 160–180mm rear; larger rotors dissipate heat better and suit Taiwan’s steep, long descents
