VO2max is commonly expressed in “milliliters per kilogram per minute (ml/kg/min),” with body weight as the denominator. Even if your absolute VO2max (L/min) stays the same, a drop in body weight raises your relative VO2max, which theoretically improves speed.

Pathway 2: Vertical propulsive work

Every running stride requires lifting the body’s weight vertically. The heavier the body, the more work is required, consuming more energy at the same speed.

Combined with a balanced diet, body weight will naturally optimize to a level suited for training over weeks to months. This is the healthiest approach and has the least negative impact on running ability.

Strategy 2: Improving diet quality (not calorie restriction)

  • Increase the proportion of vegetables and protein (to preserve muscle mass)
  • Reduce refined sugar and processed foods
  • Maintain adequate carbohydrate intake (athletes need sufficient glycogen stores)

Note: During marathon race preparation (especially the final 8 weeks), deliberate weight loss is not recommended — training and recovery should take priority.

  • Carb-loading 1-2 days before the race: Glycogen storage from carbohydrate loading increases body weight by 1-2 kg (water and glycogen stored together) — this is normal and necessary, and should not be misinterpreted as “gaining weight”
  • Hydration on race day: Proper hydration makes body weight slightly higher than usual, but sweating during the race in Taiwan’s heat can burn off 0.5-1.5 kg

Practical Recommendations

  1. The scale is an indicator, not a judge: Daily body weight naturally fluctuates by 1-2 kg — don’t get anxious over a single day’s number
  2. Prioritize building muscle mass: Strength training may increase body weight, but the resulting improvement in “power-to-weight ratio” has a greater positive effect on speed than the negative effect of a slight weight increase
  3. Special attention for female runners: If menstrual irregularity or decreased bone density occurs, calorie intake should be increased immediately — never sacrifice health for speed
  4. Consult a professional: If you have a clear weight-loss goal, it’s best to work with a sports dietitian rather than self-directed dieting

The relationship between body weight and speed is real, but it is only one variable in the equation of running performance. Rather than pouring enormous effort into weight management, it is more effective to invest that same effort into improving training quality, building strength, and refining technique.
