Overtraining Syndrome (OTS) is characterized precisely by its gradual progression—unlike an injury, which has a clear “breaking point,” OTS is a slow accumulation until one morning you wake up and find that running has become a torment rather than a joy, with no improvement even after a week of rest.

The good news is that modern wearable devices and training analysis platforms can warn you with data before OTS occurs. The question is whether you know where to look and what to look for.

A Multi-Layered Training Load Warning System

Layer 1: Garmin Real-Time Alerts

Garmin’s “Training Status” field is the easiest first line of defense to observe:

Race Preparation Anxiety: In the 8–12 weeks before major races such as the Taipei Marathon and Wan Jin Shi Marathon, many runners anxiously ramp up training volume—this period is ironically when overtraining is most likely. Remember: the goal during this period is “don’t ruin the fitness you already have,” not “keep making huge gains.”

  • Consume carbohydrates + protein within 1 hour after training: Delayed replenishment is one of the common causes of insufficient recovery
  • Sleep is the most powerful recovery tool: Each hour of lost sleep is equivalent to an approximately 10–15% increase in perceived training stress
  • Set a “training red line”: Agree with yourself that if Garmin shows Overreaching or Body Battery is continuously below 25, you cancel that day’s training
