In such a race, differences in pacing strategy can directly determine a 1–3 minute gap in finishing time.

The Physiological Basis of Ideal Power Distribution

The goal of a 40 km time trial is to maximize average speed over the entire distance, not to maximize speed at any single moment. From a physiological perspective, the optimal strategy follows these principles:

  1. Overall power should be slightly above FTP: 40 km takes approximately 55–70 minutes, which slightly exceeds the duration of a “1-hour FTP test,” so the optimal average power is around 95–103% FTP (adjusted based on individual anaerobic capacity and race duration).
  2. Avoid large anaerobic surges: Bursts exceeding FTP accumulate lactate. If you surge excessively in the early part, the speed collapse caused by lactate accumulation in the later part will cost far more time than the surge gained.

Practical Preparation: TT Events in Taiwan

Time trial courses in Taiwan are mostly flat or have slight undulations, such as sections of Kenting Boulevard and the Gaoping River Bikeway. Here are pre-race preparation suggestions:

  • Test FTP 2 weeks before the race: Confirm your current FTP baseline to avoid errors in power setting.
  • Familiarize yourself with the course terrain: Know where the gentle climbs and headwind sections are, and plan your power adjustment strategy in advance.
  • Equipment setup: Confirm that your power meter and head unit are paired correctly; during the race, it is recommended to display “3-second average power” rather than instantaneous power to avoid frequent adjustments due to road surface variations.
  • Mental preparation: In a time trial, “feeling very comfortable” usually means your pacing is too conservative; “feeling like you can barely hold on” is the correct state.

Practical Advice

  1. Hone your pacing feel with training races: Do 1–2 simulated TTs (20–30 km) each month to practice steady output near your target power.
  2. Analyze power files post-race: Check if the VI (Variability Index) is between 1.02–1.06 and if NP is close to the planned value, using this as a basis for the next adjustment.
  3. Nutrition strategy: A 40km TT typically does not require mid-race fueling, but carbohydrate loading (1–1.5g/kg) 60–90 minutes before the race and maintaining hydration during the race are very important.
