Calculating Energy Needs for a Full Marathon

A full marathon burns approximately 2,500–3,500 kcal (depending on body weight and pace). The body’s stored glycogen provides roughly 1,600–2,000 kcal, with the remainder needing to come from external fueling and fat oxidation.

When to Take Them

  • First gel: 45–50 minutes after starting (don’t wait until you feel tired—by then it’s already too late).
  • Subsequent gels: Take one every 40–45 minutes; a full marathon usually requires 4–5 gels.

The Taipei Marathon is held in December, with temperatures typically at 15–22°C, so electrolyte needs are relatively lower; but the Wan Jin Shi Marathon takes place in March, when the north coast can still reach 18–25°C in the morning, and with salt being lost faster in the salty sea breeze, extra attention is needed. The Kaohsiung Marathon, meanwhile, can face temperatures above 25°C as early as February.

Solid Fuel (Energy Bars, Bananas, Cookies)

Solid food is harder to digest while running than gels, but aid stations at Taiwanese races often provide bananas, cookies, steamed buns, and other foods, which can help runners in the latter half who need psychological comfort and blood-sugar replenishment.

  • Bananas: A recommended choice—easy to digest and rich in potassium; take half a banana at aid stations around the 30–35km mark.
  • Cookies / Steamed buns: Suitable for runners already accustomed to solid fuel; you’ll need to slow down to chew, so first-timers should use them with caution.
  • Energy bars: Fine for training, but because they are harder and more difficult to chew during a race, they are generally not recommended for race day.
