  • Open-water habituation: Weekly open-water training should reach 2000–3000 meters to acclimate the body to the sensory environment of open water
  • Race-start simulation: Practice dense pack starts and the ability to maintain sighting over long distances

Universal Training Principles

Regardless of the distance, the following principles apply to all open-water swim training:

  • Do not increase weekly training volume by more than 10–15%: Increasing volume too quickly is the main cause of injury and overtraining
  • Technical training should account for 20–30% of training volume: Speed and distance matter, but technique is the foundation of efficiency
  • Taper 2 weeks before the race: Reduce total training volume by 30–40% to allow full recovery
  • Log open-water training experiences: After each session, record water conditions, mental state, and the parts that felt difficult
