Insweep and Pull

After the outsweep reaches its widest point, the palms rotate inward (thumbs pointing up) and begin a powerful insweep. This movement sweeps the palms and forearms from the outside inward, downward, and backward, and is the primary phase where the breaststroke generates propulsion.

Key technical points of the insweep:

  • The elbows bend further to approximately 90–120 degrees
  • The palms remain vertical or slightly angled backward so the water “hangs” on the palms
  • The sweeping path is an inward and downward arc, not a straight line backward
  • The elbows should not come too close to the body; most of the insweep should be completed in front of the body

  • After the hands come together in front of the chest, immediately extend them rapidly forward
  • The forward extension is synchronized with the end of the kick, allowing the body to glide in a streamlined position
  • Do not pause too long after the forward extension; begin the next outsweep as soon as the gliding speed starts to drop

Breathing Integration

Breathing in the breaststroke occurs at the moment the hands perform the insweep and the face naturally lifts. The timing of the breath is coordinated with the insweep motion, allowing the head to rise naturally. After inhaling, the face submerges in sync with the forward extension. During the breath, do not lift the head too high (the chin should not rise above the water surface) to avoid increasing body drag.

Practical Tips

  1. Practice the rhythm of “slow outsweep, fast insweep”: During technique drills, deliberately slow down the outsweep to feel its drag, then accelerate the insweep to establish the correct rhythm of force application.
  2. Use a pull buoy to isolate the arms: Hold a pull buoy between your legs to keep them fixed and practice only the arm pull, making it easier to feel the water at each stage of the pull.
  3. Check your elbow position: When swimming breaststroke, have someone observe your elbow position from above the water to ensure your elbows do not come too close to your body too early during the insweep.
  4. Coordinate with the kick: In the full breaststroke, the kick should begin after the forward extension, not during the push, to ensure the body’s undulation and the arm pull rhythm are coordinated.
