MTB Off-Road Beginner's Guide: Choosing a Bike, Safety Gear, and Your First Trail

單車訓練

Introduction

Mountain bikes (MTB) are gaining more and more popularity among riders in Taiwan. Whether it’s weekend mountain adventures or tackling technical terrain, MTBs offer a riding experience completely different from road bikes. However, many beginners often feel lost when faced with the dizzying array of bike models and gear. This article will systematically guide you through the three-step beginner process: choosing a bike, gear, and routes.

How to Choose Your First MTB

Mountain bikes on the market can be broadly divided into three main categories based on riding terrain and needs:

Bike Type Fork Travel Suitable Terrain Recommended For
XC Cross-Country 80–120 mm Forest trails, climbing Beginners, fitness training
Trail All-Mountain 120–150 mm Mixed terrain The first choice for most beginners
Enduro 150–170 mm Technical downhill sections Upgrades after building a foundation

For most beginners in Taiwan, the Trail All-Mountain bike is the best starting point. A full-suspension model with approximately 130–140 mm of travel can handle the common forest gravel roads and mild technical sections found in Taiwan, while still offering sufficient climbing efficiency.

In terms of budget, it is recommended to prepare at least NT$30,000 or more for an entry-level full-suspension bike. If your budget is limited, a hardtail (front suspension only) for around NT$15,000–20,000 is also a viable option and helps develop basic pedaling technique.

Safety Gear Is Essential

The terrain complexity of MTB is far greater than road riding, and proper safety gear is key to staying alive:

  • Full-face helmet: Essential for downhill or technical sections; regular mountain helmets (half-shell) are only suitable for gentle XC trails
  • Knee and elbow pads: Beginners have unstable technique, and pads can greatly reduce abrasions and impact injuries
  • Goggles or sunglasses: Prevent branches, gravel, and mud from splashing into your eyes
  • Riding gloves: Increase grip control on the handlebars and protect your palms when falling
  • Stiff-soled riding shoes: Effectively transmit pedaling force and reduce the risk of your feet slipping off the pedals

Additionally, be sure to carry supplies, a phone, spare inner tubes, and a pump. Cell phone signals are unreliable in Taiwan’s mountains, so informing your companions of your trip plan in advance is also an important safety habit.

The following routes are known for their friendly terrain and moderate difficulty, making them suitable for MTB beginners to practice basic techniques:

  • New Taipei: Wulai Xinxian Trail: Gentle riverside forest trail with relatively even surfaces, suitable for familiarizing yourself with bike handling
  • Taoyuan: Dongyanshan Forest Road: A forestry road with gentle climbs and descents, solid surfaces, and beautiful scenery
  • Taichung: Dakeng Off-Road Routes (around Trails 1–3): Regularly ridden by local riding groups, with convenient access to supplies
  • Nantou: Sun Moon Lake Lakeside Route Extending into Mountain Trails: Low difficulty, pleasant scenery, ideal for a first off-road experience

Practical Tips

  • Join a local MTB team or community; for your first ride, it’s best to have experienced riders lead the way
  • Familiarize yourself with brake feel and weight shifting in a parking lot or open field before heading into the mountains
  • Check tire pressure before riding (front tire recommended at 20–25 psi, rear tire 23–28 psi, adjusted based on weight and terrain)
  • Don’t rush for speed; correct technique matters more than speed

Conclusion

The most important mindset for getting into MTB is “enjoy the process, progress step by step.” Taiwan’s mountain resources are abundant, with routes suitable for riders of all levels from north to south. Choose the right bike, gear up properly, and start with friendly routes—you’ll quickly fall in love with this challenging and fun sport.
