騎行路線

Route Overview

The Kenting Peninsula loop circles the Hengchun Peninsula and is Taiwan’s most tropical-feeling cycling route. Azure waters, white sand beaches, and spectacular coral reef coastlines—this route makes you feel like you’re riding on a Southeast Asian resort island.

Route Information

Start/Finish Hengchun Township
Distance Approx. 60 km
Elevation Gain Approx. 400 m
Surface Paved road
Difficulty ★★ (Moderate)
Suggested Time 3-5 hours

Route Details (Clockwise Direction)

Hengchun → Nanwan (0-8km)

Depart from Hengchun and head toward Kenting Street. This section passes through Kenting’s commercial area, where traffic is heavy on holidays.

Highlights along the way:

  • Nanwan Beach (blue water with white sand)
  • A surfer’s paradise
  • Coconut stalls by the roadside

Nanwan → Eluanbi (8-18km)

Head south along Provincial Highway 26, passing through the core area of Kenting National Park.

Highlights along the way:

  • Kenting Street
  • Sail Rock (a boulder shaped like a sailboat)
  • Sheding Ecological Protection Area
  • Eluanbi Lighthouse (the landmark at Taiwan’s southernmost point)

Eluanbi → Jialeshui (18-35km)

This is the most spectacular section of the loop. The route follows the peninsula’s eastern coastline northward, featuring dramatic coral reef shores and wide-open views of the Pacific Ocean.

Highlights along the way:

  • Longpan Park (sweeping Pacific Ocean views)
  • Fengchuisha (wind-eroded terrain wonder)
  • Jialeshui Scenic Area (sea-eroded rock formations)

Note: This section has the strongest winds of the entire route. During the northeast monsoon season, you may face strong headwinds, so be mentally prepared.

Jialeshui → Hengchun (35-60km)

From Jialeshui, cross the peninsula’s interior back to Hengchun. This section passes through farmland and pastures on the Hengchun Plain.

Highlights along the way:

  • Hengchun Old City Gates
  • Chuhuo Special Scenic Area
  • Jute Industry Historical Exhibition Area

Dealing with Wind Conditions

Kenting is famous for its “luoshan wind” (falling mountain wind), and wind is the biggest variable on this route.

Seasonal Wind Patterns

Season Prevailing Wind Impact
Oct-Mar Northeast monsoon (luoshan wind) Strong headwinds on eastern sections
Apr-May Variable winds Weaker wind strength
Jun-Sep Southwest wind Possible headwinds on western sections

Riding Direction Recommendations

Choose clockwise or counterclockwise based on wind direction:

  • Northeast monsoon period: Ride counterclockwise (tailwind on the eastern section)
  • Southwest wind period: Ride clockwise
  • Calm period: Choose either direction

Wind-Resistance Techniques

  • Lower your body position and grip the drops
  • Use a lighter gear to maintain a steady cadence
  • Don’t fight the wind; accept a lower speed
  • Wear cycling glasses to protect your eyes from blown sand

Best Time to Ride

Seasons

  • Best: Mar-May (stable weather, luoshan wind has ended)
  • Second best: Oct-Nov (crisp autumn air but winds begin)
  • Avoid: Jul-Aug at noon (temperatures exceed 35°C)

Time of Day

  • Depart at 6:00 AM and finish before 10:00 AM
  • Or depart at 3:00 PM and watch the sunset at Eluanbi in the evening

Resupply Points

Location Resupply Type Notes
Hengchun Township Full resupply Stock up before departure
Nanwan Convenience store, drink stalls Refill water and energy
Eluanbi Small shop Basic supplies
Jialeshui Small store Limited options
Manzhou Convenience store Last resupply before the return

Important: Resupply points are extremely scarce on the eastern section (Eluanbi to Jialeshui). Be sure to carry enough water and food before setting out.

Safety Notes

  1. Sun protection: UV levels in Kenting are extremely strong; sun protection is needed year-round
  2. Hydration: In the hot, humid environment, drink at least 750ml per hour
  3. Luoshan wind: From Oct-Mar, gusts can reach Force 10 or above; do not ride in extreme weather
  4. Traffic: Holiday traffic in Kenting is extremely heavy; stay alert
  5. Animals: Cattle occasionally appear on the road (yes, really)

Accommodation Suggestions

If you plan to stay in Kenting for a few days, here are accommodation suggestions combined with cycling:

  • Hengchun Township: Lower prices, close to the starting point
  • Kenting Street: Lively and convenient but more expensive
  • Nanwan: Quiet seaside accommodation
  • Houbihu: Close to diving and seafood

Conclusion

The Kenting Peninsula loop is Taiwan’s most tropical-feeling cycling route. Blue skies, azure seas, white sands—riding here, you’ll forget you’re in Taiwan. The only thing you need to “conquer” is Kenting’s famous wind. But it’s precisely this wind that makes Kenting’s coastline so dramatic and this route so unique.
