Ride an all-out 30-minute time trial, and take the average heart rate of the final 20 minutes as your estimated LTHR. For example, if the average heart rate over the last 20 minutes of a 30-minute time trial is 168 bpm, then LTHR ≈ 168 bpm.
Choosing Between the Two Systems
- Beginners → Choose the 5-zone system: Simple to understand and highly compatible with Garmin and Wahoo devices — ideal for riders just starting structured training
- Advanced riders → Choose the 7-zone system: Enables more precise training prescriptions, especially when preparing for long-distance events or fondos
- Riders with a power meter → Prioritize power, use heart rate as a secondary reference: Power responds instantly while heart rate lags, so intensity should be controlled primarily by power
Limitations of Heart Rate Training
- Heart rate lag: It takes 30–60 seconds for heart rate to reflect a change in intensity, making it unsuitable for real-time monitoring during interval training
- Cardiac drift: On long rides, heart rate tends to rise later in the ride at the same power output — this needs to be accounted for
- Environmental factors: Heat, dehydration, caffeine, and lack of sleep all affect heart rate; the same power output may produce a heart rate 5–10 bpm higher in summer
Practical Recommendations
- Retest your maximum heart rate or LTHR periodically, especially after completing a full training cycle
- Set up personalized heart rate zones in Garmin Connect or the Wahoo app rather than relying on default values
- On long rides (such as an island circumnavigation), use heart rate as your primary monitoring metric to avoid overexertion in the early stages
