Factors Affecting Ramp Test Results

  • Nutrition: Eat normally 2–3 hours before the test to ensure sufficient glycogen stores
  • Trainer environment: High temperatures suppress performance; test in a cool environment (use a fan for cooling)
  • Cadence setting: Maintain your habitual cadence (80–90 RPM); too low a cadence will fatigue muscles prematurely
  • Mental preparation: The final stage of the test is extremely painful; mentally preparing for “knowing it will hurt” helps you push 1–2 minutes longer
