Taper Week Design

Enter the taper 7–10 days before competition:

  • Daily training volume reduced to 50–60% of the specific preparation phase
  • Keep 1–2 sprint sessions, but with very few sets (3–5 × 25m)
  • Thorough stretching and recovery after every session

Transition Phase (2–4 weeks)

After the season ends, you should not immediately begin training for the next season. The transition phase provides complete physical and mental recovery:

  • 2–3 easy swims per week (500–1000m), focused on enjoyment and technical feel
  • Try other sports (cycling, yoga, hiking) to avoid over-specialization
  • Evaluate the season’s performance and plan goals for the next cycle

  1. Before each cycle begins, use a CSS test to confirm your current ability baseline and set target paces for each intensity zone accordingly
  2. Don’t rush to add intensity during the general preparation phase—the thicker the foundation, the higher you can build in the specific preparation phase
  3. During the taper, athletes often feel like they “aren’t swimming enough” or “haven’t trained their body”—this is normal; trust the process
  4. A periodized plan is not set in stone; if an athlete shows signs of overtraining, adjust the week’s intensity at any time
