- Cancel interval training in high heat: When temperatures exceed 32°C, the cardiac load of high-intensity training is excessive; it is recommended to switch to easy runs
Choosing Heart Rate Monitoring Tools
- Chest strap heart rate monitors: Highest accuracy; recommended: Garmin HRM-Pro, Polar H10
- Optical wrist heart rate: Built into most GPS watches; slightly less accurate and lags during rapid pace changes
- Arm band heart rate monitors: Accuracy falls between the two; more stable than wrist bands during exercise
Practical Advice
- Measure your individual HRmax; do not use formula estimates
- Measure resting heart rate every morning to establish a personal baseline and track trends
- Strictly adhere to the Zone 2 heart rate ceiling on easy run days; do not let your heart rate drift into Zone 3 just because you feel good
- Analyze heart rate data together with pace: at the same heart rate, a faster pace means improved fitness
- In Taiwan’s summer, use heart rate as the sole intensity reference; let pace follow heart rate completely
