The Evolution of Tire Width

Over the past decade, road bike tire widths have undergone a massive transformation:

  • 2015: 23mm was the standard
  • 2018: 25mm became mainstream
  • 2022: 28mm started to become widespread
  • 2025: 28-30mm becomes the new standard, with some riders using 32mm

Why Are Tires Getting Wider?

  1. Lower Rolling Resistance: Wider tires deform more evenly at lower pressures
  2. Better Comfort: Absorb more road vibrations
  3. Improved Grip: Larger contact patch
  4. Minimal Aerodynamic Impact: When paired with wide-rim wheels, aerodynamic losses are negligible

What is TPI?

TPI (Threads Per Inch) refers to the casing weave density per inch.

60 TPI Stiffer, good puncture protection Commuting, training
120 TPI Supple, good grip Training, racing
170+ TPI Extremely supple, lowest rolling resistance Pure racing use

High TPI tires have lower rolling resistance and better road feel, but offer less puncture protection and are more expensive.

The Impact of Tread Pattern

Slick Tires

  • The standard choice for road bikes
  • Provide good grip on both dry and wet surfaces
  • Hydroplaning is not an issue at road bike speeds

Tires with Tread

  • Primarily provide psychological comfort
  • At road bike speeds (20-60 km/h), tread has minimal impact on grip
  • Some tread designs can offer slight assistance on loose surfaces

Puncture Protection Technologies

Puncture protection technologies from various brands:
