Okay, that analogy is a bit exaggerated. The riders in the Tour de Taiwan are all professional level, but as the only UCI WorldTeam in this year’s edition, Lotto-Intermarche’s presence instantly elevated the competition by several notches.

Before understanding why Lotto-Intermarche is so strong, let’s first look at the UCI team classification:

Lotto-Intermarche is a first-tier team, while most of their opponents in the Tour de Taiwan are third-tier Continental teams. This is like having an NBA team play in the SBL—the skill gap isn’t even on the same scale.

Other teams? Most could only spare one or two teammates to do the same.

Both Fox and Grisel have the ability to win, which means opponents must mark two riders simultaneously. If you cover Fox, Grisel slips away; if you cover Grisel, Fox attacks. This “two-headed snake” tactic is nearly unsolvable at the Tour de Taiwan’s level.

3. Physical Reserves

WorldTeams have top-tier training facilities, nutritionists, and data analysis teams. Over a five-day stage race, the gap in physical management gradually widens.

4. Race Experience

Lotto-Intermarche’s riders compete year-round in Europe’s top-tier events. The Tour de Taiwan is essentially a “warm-up race” at the start of their season, but for many Continental teams, this is one of the most important races of the year. The psychological pressure is completely different.

But It Wasn’t Total Domination

Interestingly, the final Yellow Jersey didn’t stay with Lotto-Intermarche. Brady Gilmore (Israel-Premier Tech) successfully turned things around on the final stage and claimed the overall title.

2. The importance of individual ability: Gilmore’s personal strength was enough to bridge the gap in team level

Lotto-Intermarche’s participation is a double-edged sword for the Tour de Taiwan:

• Challenge: Other teams might lose motivation, thinking “we can’t win anyway”

But judging by the results, the 2026 Tour de Taiwan was still full of suspense and excitement—perhaps the best possible outcome.
