Brady Gilmore's Road to Defending His Title: From Intern to Back-to-Back Champion's Comeback Story
Three Years Ago He Was Handing Water Bottles to His Teammates, Now He Wears the Yellow Jersey
If someone had told you in 2023: “That Australian intern fetching drinks for the Israel-Premier Tech team will become the defending champion of the Tour de Taiwan two years later,” you probably would have thought they were joking.
But Brady Gilmore did it.
Gilmore’s Evolution Timeline
| Year | Role | Achievement |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | IPT Stagiaire | Learning, assisting, observing |
| 2024 | IPT Academy Member | Gaining experience in the development team |
| 2025 | Full Team Member | First Tour de Taiwan title |
| 2026 | Core Rider | Defending Tour de Taiwan champion |
In the world of professional cycling, “stagiaire” means intern. Every late summer and early autumn, WorldTeams and ProTeams invite a few promising young riders to trial with the team. You have no official contract, no fixed salary, but you get the chance to train and race alongside the world’s top riders.
Most stagiaires never end up earning a full contract. But Gilmore not only secured a contract—he became the team’s ace for Asian races within just two years.
The Low-Key Strategy at the 2026 Tour de Taiwan
Interestingly, Gilmore didn’t win a single stage in the five-stage Tour de Taiwan. His strategy was: Don’t be the protagonist, but always be at the front.
| Stage | Performance |
|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Stayed with the main peloton |
| Stage 2 | Didn’t lose ground on the climbs |
| Stage 3 | Held a front position |
| Stage 4 | Finished with the group |
| Stage 5 | Pushed hard at the decisive moment to secure the overall classification |
No flashy stage victories, no thrilling breakaway attacks—but every stage kept the time gaps to an absolute minimum. This “quietly get rich” strategy is often the most effective in stage races.
The Final Showdown
Heading into Stage 5, Grisel (Lotto-Intermarche) wore the yellow jersey, and Gilmore needed to find an opportunity to overturn the deficit on the final 153 km stage in Hualien.
The comeback itself showcased Gilmore’s precise control of race tempo. While other riders focused on sprint points and stage placings, he saved all his energy for the most critical moment.
Final result: 13 hours, 44 minutes, and 43 seconds, successfully defending his title.
The Australian Cycling Tradition
Australia has always been a powerhouse in road cycling. From Cadel Evans (2011 Tour de France champion) to Caleb Ewan (top-tier sprinter), Australian riders have maintained a strong presence on the international scene.
Gilmore continues that tradition—and he’s only 25 years old (born in 2001). If he can sustain this growth curve, he’s worth watching on the big European stages in the future.
What Defending Means
Winning the same race two years in a row means:
- The first time wasn’t luck
- You truly understand every detail of this race
- Your rivals know you’re coming, know you’re strong, but still can’t stop you
In the history of the Tour de Taiwan, very few riders have managed to defend their title. Gilmore has proven with his actions that his strength is no flash in the pan.
Lessons from Intern to Champion
Gilmore’s story is the best motivational material for all young riders:
- Seize every opportunity: The stagiaire period is prime time to showcase your ability
- Be patient: It took three years from internship to title, which is already fast in professional sports
- Find the stage that suits you: You don’t have to shine at the Tour de France; ruling the Tour de Taiwan is also a form of success
- Keep improving: From first title to defense, Gilmore’s ability has been rising steadily
Will Gilmore come back to challenge for a three-peat in 2027? Let’s wait and see.
