Why Don’t They Just Ride Separately?

The most common question from people watching road cycling races for the first time is: “Why do these riders bunch up together? Wouldn’t it be safer to ride separately?”

The answer is simple: Wind resistance.

At speeds above 45 km/h, roughly 80-90% of a rider’s energy output goes toward overcoming air resistance. By drafting behind another rider, you can save about 30-40% of your energy.

So, unless you have an overwhelming advantage in raw power, riding alone at the front is essentially acting as a windbreak for everyone else—you exhaust yourself while those behind you rest.

The Basic Structure of a Bunch Sprint

In the flat stages of the Tour de Taiwan (especially Stage 1 and Stage 4), a bunch sprint is the most common way the race ends. Here is its basic structure:

5 km to go: Positioning

  • Teams begin gathering their riders at the front of the peloton
  • Speed increases from 42-43 km/h to 48-50 km/h
  • The key at this stage is position—who is at the front, who is exposed to the wind

3 km to go: Acceleration Phase

  • Speed continues to climb above 55 km/h
  • Lead-out trains begin to take shape
  • Riders without teammates start getting pushed to the margins

1 km to go: Final Positioning

  • Speed reaches 58-62 km/h
  • Lead-out riders peel off one by one after completing their tasks
  • Sprinters prepare to launch their final attack

200 m to go: Full Sprint

  • Speed surges to 65-71 km/h (as Rajovic did in the Pingtung stage)
  • Pure explosive power decides the outcome
  • Lasts only 10-15 seconds

The Lead-out Train

The lead-out train Lotto-Intermarche displayed in the Kaohsiung stage was a textbook example:

5 km to go: [Rider A] → [Rider B] → [Rider C] → [Rider D] → [Grisel]
3 km to go: [Rider B] → [Rider C] → [Rider D] → [Grisel]  (A finishes his job and pulls off)
1 km to go: [Rider C] → [Rider D] → [Grisel]  (B pulls off)
500 m to go: [Rider D] → [Grisel]  (C pulls off)
200 m to go: [Grisel] sprints alone  (D pulls off)

Each lead-out rider is exhausted after riding full gas at the front for 1-2 km, but their sacrifice ensures the sprinter enters the final sprint with minimal energy expenditure and the best possible position.

Why Can Rajovic Attack from the Side?

Most sprinters choose to sit directly behind their lead-out rider, as that is the position with the least wind resistance. But Rajovic proved another possibility in the Taipei stage:

When the position at the front is not ideal, attacking from the side has a surprising advantage—your opponents can’t see you.

During a high-speed sprint, riders’ vision is focused primarily straight ahead. A threat suddenly emerging from the side often catches them off guard.

Of course, the cost of this strategy is that you must endure additional crosswind resistance, requiring greater explosive power to compensate.

Advice for New Spectators

Next time you watch the Tour de Taiwan or any other road race, try paying attention to these details:

  1. At 5 km to go, see which teams are lined up at the front
  2. Notice the length and rhythm of the lead-out trains
  3. Observe when sprinters launch their effort in the final 200 meters
  4. Watch whether anyone attempts an attack from a non-traditional position (the side, the outside line)

Once you understand the intricacies of the bunch sprint, the world of road cycling becomes incredibly exciting.
