  • Avoid the Zone 3 gray zone: Many people ride at an intensity that’s “somewhat tiring but not hard enough.” This intensity gets you the worst of both worlds—it burns little fat and isn’t intense enough to stimulate high-intensity adaptations
  • One long aerobic ride per month: A 4–6 hour low-intensity endurance ride (such as a leg of a round-island tour) can deplete substantial body fat and promote upregulation of fat oxidation enzymes
  • Pair with 2 high-intensity sessions: 1–2 HIIT or VO2max interval sessions per week boost overall metabolic rate, creating a “polarized training” pattern when combined with low-intensity work
