In Taiwan, the competitive swimming calendar typically revolves around the National High School Athletic Games, the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games, or various county and city championships. Therefore, planning how to build from an autumn start to a spring/summer peak is a key focus for coaches and athletes alike.
The Four Main Phases of the Annual Cycle
1. Base Phase (Autumn, September–November)
The goal of this phase is to build an aerobic foundation, refine technical movements, and restore the body’s condition. Training volume is high and intensity is low, with the focus on:
- Long-distance aerobic swimming: Each session reaches 6,000–8,000 meters
- Technical correction: Underwater video analysis of stroke rate and hand entry angle
- Strength building: Dry-land resistance training (swim ergometer, resistance bands)
- Flexibility training: Ankle and shoulder joint mobility
The base phase does not pursue speed; it is about “laying the foundation”—allowing the cardiorespiratory system and muscles to adapt to the stimulus of high training volume.
2. Build Phase (Winter, December–February)
Entering the build phase, intensity gradually increases, and aerobic training begins to incorporate anaerobic threshold work. Main components:

- Pre-race scenario simulation (timed swims in racing suits)
- Small-group race-pace training to stimulate competitive instinct
4. Peak Phase and Taper (3 weeks before competition)

Common Periodization Mistakes Among Taiwanese Athletes
Common errors made by many junior athletes and grassroots coaches include:
- Maintaining the same intensity year-round: Lacking high-low fluctuation, the body adapts and plateaus
- Entering high intensity too early: Chasing speed before the foundation is solid, which easily leads to injury
- Ignoring recovery weeks: A lower-load recovery week should be scheduled every 3–4 weeks
- No clear target for major competitions: Training without a goal is difficult to focus
It is recommended that athletes and coaches jointly identify 1–2 major target competitions for the year in early September, then work backward to map out the timeline for each phase.
Practical Recommendations
- Use a training log to record weekly volume and Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) to easily review training load trends
- Schedule a time trial once a month to track progress during the base and build phases
- Communicate regularly with your coach: Review every 4 weeks whether the periodization plan needs fine-tuning
- Take advantage of Taiwan’s climate: Outdoor pools are usable year-round in Taiwan, so the base phase can be extended
- Incorporate an “overreaching week” during the build phase, deliberately increasing training load followed by recovery to promote supercompensation
