The core strategy for breaking through a plateau is to systematically increase stimulus intensity, which is the concept of an “Overreaching Week.”

Why Do Plateaus Occur?

There are usually three main reasons for entering a plateau:

  • Insufficient training stimulus: Maintaining the same training volume and intensity for a long period means the body no longer needs to adapt
  • Unresolved technical issues: Technical bottlenecks limit speed improvements, so even if fitness increases, it can’t translate into better results
  • Inadequate recovery: The body hasn’t fully recovered after overtraining, so every session is performed in a state of “debt”

The overreaching week primarily targets the first reason, using a short (1-week) high-load stimulus to reactivate the body’s adaptive response.

An overreaching week is not about “just swimming more,” but rather achieving Functional Overreaching in a structured way: deliberately subjecting the body to loads beyond normal levels over a short period, then providing sufficient recovery to elevate competitive performance during the supercompensation phase.

Athletes typically see significant performance improvements in time trials held after the recovery week ends.

Practical Recommendations

  1. Schedule an overreaching week every 4–6 weeks, not more frequently
  2. Confirm the athlete’s health status before the overreaching week: postpone if there is a cold, muscle soreness, or mental burnout
  3. Record RPE and morning resting heart rate throughout: if heart rate remains abnormally elevated, shorten the schedule immediately
  4. Arrange a 2-week recovery period after the overreaching week (rather than 1 week) to ensure full supercompensation
  5. Evaluate effectiveness with time trials: conduct them after the recovery week ends to objectively track breakthrough progress
