A Wheelset Can Cost More Than Your Frame
If your road bike’s wheelset is carbon fiber, it may account for 30-50% of the total bike’s price. Even an aluminum wheelset is a significant investment. Taking good care of it is absolutely worthwhile.
The Three Main Components of a Wheelset
| Component | Function | Maintenance Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Hub | Axle and bearings | Lubrication, play adjustment |
| Spokes | Connect the hub to the rim | Even tension |
| Rim | Supports the tire, braking surface | Trueness, wear inspection |
Hub Maintenance
Inside the hub are bearings, which are the key to a wheel spinning smoothly.
How to Check
- Spin test: Pick up the wheel and spin it by hand. It should spin smoothly and for a long time, with no gritty sound
- Wobble test: Grip the wheel and rock it up and down. Noticeable play means the bearing clearance is too large
- Feel test: If you feel grittiness or a “clicking” sensation while spinning, the bearings may need cleaning or replacement
Maintenance Frequency
| Riding Conditions | Maintenance Frequency |
|---|---|
| General fair-weather riding | Every 3,000-5,000 km or once a year |
| Frequent rainy-day riding | Every 2,000-3,000 km |
| After Taiwan’s plum rain season | One extra inspection |
Maintenance Steps (Cartridge Bearing Hubs)
Modern wheelsets mostly use Sealed Cartridge Bearings:
- Remove the end caps and dust covers
- Take out the bearings and clean the bearing seats
- Check whether the bearings spin smoothly
- If they feel gritty, replace with new bearings
- Apply waterproof grease when reassembling
- Tighten once you’ve confirmed there is no play
Taiwan tip: Our high-humidity environment accelerates bearing corrosion. Use a waterproof grease (such as Phil Wood Waterproof Grease) and do an extra inspection after the plum rain season.
Spoke Maintenance
Why Do Spokes Break?
The most common cause is not “too much force,” but uneven tension. When some spokes are too loose and others too tight, the tighter ones bear excessive stress cycles and eventually fail from fatigue.
Checking Spoke Tension
- Pinch method: Pinch two adjacent spokes and feel whether the tension is consistent. If one is noticeably slack, it needs adjustment
- Sound method: Tap the spokes lightly with an Allen key and listen to the pitch. Spokes on the same side should have a similar pitch
- Tension meter: The most precise method — measure with a spoke tension meter (such as the Park Tool TM-1)
What to Do If a Spoke Breaks?
- If it breaks mid-ride: If possible, wrap the broken spoke around an adjacent spoke and ride home slowly
- After you get home: Buy a replacement spoke of the same length and specification (bring the old one to the bike shop for comparison)
- After replacement: You’ll need to re-adjust the spoke tension and trueness in that area of the wheel
Wheel Truing
When Is Truing Needed?
- A regular “click-click” sound while braking (the rim wobbling and rubbing against the brake pad)
- A noticeable side-to-side wobble visible when spinning the wheel
- After hitting a pothole or a crash
Basic Truing Method
- Mount the wheel on a truing stand (if you don’t have one, you can use the brake pad as a reference point)
- Find the point of greatest wobble
- If it wobbles to the left → tighten the right-side spoke (or loosen the left)
- If it wobbles to the right → tighten the left-side spoke (or loosen the right)
- Turn only 1/4 turn at a time, then re-check
Important: Truing a wheel requires patience. Don’t turn too much at once, or you may over-correct and create new problems.
Rim Inspection
Rim Brake (V-brake/Caliper) Wheelsets
- The braking surface (side of the rim) has wear indicators. Once worn to a certain point, the rim should be retired
- Regularly run your finger along the braking surface to check for noticeable concavity
Disc Brake Wheelsets
- The rim has no braking-surface wear issue
- But pay attention to keeping the disc mounting surface clean and the rotor bolts properly torqued
Special Care for Carbon Fiber Wheelsets
| Note | Description |
|---|---|
| Cleaning | Use warm water and a neutral detergent; avoid abrasive cleaners |
| Impact | Unlike aluminum, carbon fiber doesn’t bend — it cracks. Inspect carefully after any impact |
| Brake pads | Use carbon-rim-specific brake pads (if using rim brakes) |
| Storage | Avoid prolonged sun exposure (UV rays degrade the resin) |
| Sound check | Tap with a coin and listen for a “dull” sound (may indicate internal damage) |
Wheelset Lifespan
| Material | Expected Lifespan |
|---|---|
| Aluminum (rim brake) | 20,000-30,000 km (limited by braking surface wear) |
| Aluminum (disc brake) | 50,000+ km |
| Carbon fiber | May last even longer, depending on use and maintenance |
Take good care of your wheelset, and it will carry you much further down the road.
