It Can Support Your Weight, Yet Fears a Single Screw
Carbon fiber frames are the mainstream material for modern road bikes. They’re light, stiff, and good-looking. But they also have a fatal weakness: they don’t bend, they crack.
Carbon Fiber vs. Aluminum Alloy Differences

Torque Values! Torque Values! Torque Values!
If you only remember one thing about carbon fiber maintenance, remember this: always use a torque wrench.
Carbon fiber tubing is very strong in specific directions, but has very low resistance to “crushing” forces. If you over-tighten a bolt, the carbon tube will shatter.
Common torque specifications:

Important: Specifications vary between different bike models. Always check the markings on the frame and components.
Carbon Assembly Paste
This stuff is so important it deserves its own section.
On contact surfaces between carbon and carbon, or carbon and metal, do not use regular grease. Use carbon-specific assembly paste.

Assembly paste contains fine particles (rubber or sand granules) that increase friction, allowing you to secure components with lower torque.
There are two types on the market:
- Hard grit type: Maximum friction, but leaves fine scratches on the carbon surface
- Rubber particle type: Doesn’t scratch the surface, suitable for most situations (recommended)
Daily Cleaning

Carbon Fiber Frame Inspection
When to Inspect?
- After every ride (quick visual check)
- After a crash or impact (thorough inspection)
- Deep inspection every six months
What to Inspect?
- Cracks: Carefully inspect every tube surface with a flashlight
- Delamination: Carbon fiber delamination can sometimes look like a raised area on the surface
- Sound test: Gently tap the carbon tubes with a coin. A healthy carbon tube produces a crisp sound; if an area sounds “dull,” there may be internal damage
- Bolt holes: Check around bolt holes for cracks
Frame Protection

Recommendation: Apply protective film on the very first day you bring your new bike home. The cost of film (NT$1,000-3,000) is far lower than the loss from repainting or scrapping a frame.
Storage Considerations
- Store indoors in a dry, cool place
- Avoid prolonged sun exposure (UV rays degrade the resin)
- Don’t place heavy objects on the frame
- Be careful when laying the bike down—a carbon fork hitting the ground can cause internal damage
Special Notes for Taiwan
- Sweat: Taiwan summers mean heavy sweating at the drop of a hat. Sweat is acidic and will corrode the carbon frame’s surface coating. Always wipe the bike dry after every ride
- Salt: If you frequently ride coastal routes, be sure to wash the bike when you get home
- Parking: Don’t casually lean a carbon bike against a wall or lay it on the ground. Use a bike stand or wall mount
A carbon fiber frame might be the most expensive “plastic product” you’ll ever buy. Take good care of it, and it will reward you with the lightest, most comfortable riding experience.
