The Science of Tire Pressure: Harder Isn't Always Faster — Finding Your Optimal PSI

You’re Probably Overinflating

Ten years ago, the consensus in the road cycling world was “the higher the pressure, the better — harder means faster.” But modern research and testing have thoroughly overturned this idea.

Why Isn’t Harder Faster?

Vibration loss theory: When a tire is overinflated, it can’t absorb the small bumps in the road surface. The energy from those bumps doesn’t just disappear — it turns into vibration that travels into your body and frame. That “wasted energy” is additional resistance.

Conversely, a properly supple tire can “swallow” small road bumps, letting more energy go toward forward motion.

Tire Pressure Reference Chart

Here are approximate reference values for a modern road bike with 28mm tires:

Note: The rear wheel carries more weight, so its pressure should be 5-10 PSI higher than the front.

Factors That Affect Optimal Pressure

Tubed vs. tubeless Tubeless can go 5-10 PSI lower

Weather Wet roads benefit from 3-5 PSI less pressure for better grip

The Tubeless Pressure Advantage

Tubeless systems can run lower pressure because there’s no risk of a “pinch flat” — where the inner tube gets pinched and cut between the rim and the tire.

That 5-10 PSI difference brings better comfort, more grip, and lower rolling resistance on rough roads.

How to Measure and Adjust

  1. Use a pump with an accurate gauge: Cheap pump gauges can be inaccurate — it’s worth investing in a good floor pump (about NT$1,000-3,000)
  2. Pump before every ride: Tires naturally lose air, roughly 1-2 PSI per day
  3. Account for temperature: Pressure rises as temperature rises. If you pump up your tires in an air-conditioned room and then ride under the hot sun, the pressure may end up 3-5 PSI higher

Road Surface Considerations in Taiwan

Road quality in Taiwan varies considerably:

  • Smooth urban roads: You can run higher pressure
  • Rural roads: Often have cracks and patches — lower pressure by 3-5 PSI
  • Mountain roads: Lots of switchbacks on descents — slightly lower pressure improves grip
  • Bike paths: Some surfaces have noticeable bumps at the seams — slightly lower pressure is more comfortable

Try the Experiment

If you’ve always been running 100+ PSI, try dropping to the values suggested in the chart above and ride your usual route. You might be surprised to find:

  • Your saddle sores are gone
  • Your hands no longer go numb
  • You’re not slower (you might even be faster)
  • You corner with more confidence

Tire pressure isn’t about going as high as possible. Finding the number that’s “just right” is the art of bike setup.
