Internal Cable Routing Replacement Technique

Internal cable routing is a nightmare for many riders. Here’s the key to doing it successfully:

Golden rule: never pull the old cable out without leaving something in its place to guide the new one through.

  1. Simplest method: As you pull out the old inner cable, tape a thin length of string to its tail end first. That way, as the old cable comes out, the guide string gets pulled into the frame at the same time.

  2. Magnet method: Use a strong magnet (such as the one included with the Park Tool IR-1.2 internal cable routing kit) on the outside of the frame to guide the cable through the internal channel.

  3. Vacuum method: Feed a length of string in at one end, then use a vacuum cleaner at the other end — the airflow pulls the string through.

The Right Way to Cut Housing

A dedicated cable/housing cutter is an essential tool. Cutting housing with ordinary pliers will crush it flat, leaving internal burrs that impede smooth cable movement.

Correct steps:

  1. Cut through cleanly in a single motion with a proper housing cutter.
  2. Use a pointed tool to clean up and round out the cut end.
  3. Confirm the bore is clear (thread the inner cable through to check).
  4. Fit the housing end cap.

DIY Replacement or Take It to a Shop?

Adjustments After Replacement

New cables will show a slight amount of “stretch” during the first few rides (this is actually the housing and cable ends settling and compressing). After replacing your cables, it’s recommended to:

  1. Firmly tug on the new cables a few times to help them seat.
  2. Ride a short distance (5-10 km).
  3. Fine-tune your shifting and brakes once you get back.
  4. Check again after one week.

A full set of new cables costs roughly NT$200-500 if you do it yourself, or NT$500-1,500 including labor at a shop. But the improvement in handling feel is immediate and obvious — your shifting will become crisp and precise, and your brakes will become sharp and responsive. This is easily one of the best value-for-money upgrades you can make.
