- If the goal is to reach the final with the best possible time, requesting a competitive heat may produce better results due to competitive stimulation; however, it may also lead to excessive psychological pressure from lane allocation.
- In systems with split times, swimmers can precisely control the lane they obtain in the final through pacing choices in the preliminary round.
Practical Recommendations
- Do not over-believe in lane influence: The middle-lane advantage exists statistically, but its impact on any individual swimmer is far smaller than their own technical and physical preparation.
- Simulate different lane scenarios in training: Have swimmers practice swimming in different positions (against the wall or in the middle) to develop the mental resilience to perform consistently regardless of lane assignment.
- Strengthen mental preparation for outer-lane swimmers: If assigned to an outer lane, accept in advance the situation of “not being able to see main competitors,” and reinforce confidence in relying on one’s own sense of pace.
- Research the lane allocation rules of target events: Understand the preliminary-to-final lane assignment mechanism in advance and develop a corresponding preliminary pacing strategy.
