Quick Release vs Thru Axle: Maintenance Differences Between Two Wheel Retention Systems

裝備介紹

Flip a Lever vs Turn a Bolt

Quick Release (QR) and Thru Axle (TA) are two completely different ways of securing a wheelset. With the rise of disc brakes, thru axles have become standard equipment on new bikes.

Basic Comparison

Item Quick Release Thru Axle
Removal method Flip the lever open Unscrew with a hex wrench
Tools needed None 5-6mm hex wrench required
Stiffness Average Higher
Compatibility with disc brakes Possible but not ideal Best match
Installation precision May be misaligned Precise alignment
Modern bikes Entry-level/older models Mid-to-high-end/newer models

Quick Release Maintenance

Item Frequency Method
Cam mechanism cleaning Every 3 months Wipe clean and apply a thin coat of oil
Spring check At installation Confirm the narrow end faces inward
Clamping force Every installation Closing the lever should require real effort (about 5-7 kgf)

Safety reminder: When the quick release lever is fully closed, it should require some effort. If it closes too easily, tighten the adjusting nut further. A quick release that is too loose can allow the wheel to come loose while riding — extremely dangerous.

Thru Axle Maintenance

Item Frequency Method
Thread greasing Every 3 months Apply a thin layer of grease to prevent seizing
Torque check Every installation Tighten to spec (typically 10-20 Nm)
Thread inspection Every 6 months Check for damage or cross-threading
O-ring check Annually Confirm the water seal is intact

Thru Axle Specifications

Position Common Specs
Front wheel 12×100mm (road), 15×100mm
Rear wheel 12×142mm (road), 12×148mm (Boost MTB)

When buying a replacement thru axle, make sure all three parameters — length, diameter, and thread pitch — match.

Switching from Quick Release to Thru Axle?

Not possible — the two systems are incompatible. A quick-release frame has open dropouts, while a thru-axle frame has closed dropouts. To switch systems, you would need to replace the frame/fork.

Removal and Installation Tips

Quick Release removal/installation:

  1. Flip the quick release lever open
  2. Turn the adjusting nut counterclockwise a few turns if needed
  3. The wheel will drop out naturally
  4. When reinstalling, make sure the wheel is fully seated before closing the lever

Thru Axle removal/installation:

  1. Unscrew the thru axle counterclockwise with a hex wrench
  2. Pull the axle out
  3. Remove the wheel
  4. When reinstalling, align the wheel and thread the axle in by hand a few turns first to confirm the threads are engaged correctly
  5. Tighten to the specified torque using a torque wrench

Note: If the thru axle threads cross-thread during installation, it will damage the threads in the frame/fork — an expensive repair. Always confirm the threads are properly engaged by hand before using a tool to tighten.
