# Bicycle Pedal Bearing Maintenance and Replacement Guide

裝備介紹

Your Feet Step on Them Thousands of Times a Day

Pedals are among the most heavily stressed components on a bicycle. Your entire body weight plus pedaling force is transmitted through the pedals. If the bearings are not maintained, they will not only make noise but also affect pedaling efficiency.

Types of Pedal Bearings

Type Features Common Models
Loose ball bearings Adjustable, serviceable Mid-range pedals
Sealed cartridge bearings Non-adjustable, require replacement High-end pedals
Needle bearings Low friction, durable Top-tier pedals

Checking Pedal Bearings

  1. Grab the pedal and rock it up and down—play indicates worn bearings or the need for adjustment
  2. Spin the pedal—it should rotate smoothly and persistently, without any grinding sound
  3. Unusual noise while pedaling during a ride—could be a bearing issue

Servicing Loose Ball Bearing Pedals

  1. Remove the pedals (right pedal is right-hand threaded, tightens clockwise; left pedal is left-hand threaded, tightens counterclockwise)
  2. Remove the end cap and lock ring
  3. Take out the balls (be careful not to lose them!)
  4. Clean all parts with a degreaser
  5. Inspect the balls and cups for pitting or dents
  6. Reapply bearing grease
  7. Reinstall the balls and cups
  8. Adjust the play: tighten until there is just no play but the rotation remains smooth
  9. Tighten the lock ring

Servicing Sealed Cartridge Bearing Pedals

Maintenance for sealed cartridge bearings is relatively simple:

  • If rotation is smooth and there is no play → no action needed
  • If there is grinding or play → replace the entire bearing set
  • On some high-end pedals (such as Look Kéo Blade), the bearings can be purchased and replaced individually

Important Notes on Pedal Installation

Item Specification
Right pedal Right-hand thread (loosens counterclockwise)
Left pedal Left-hand thread (loosens clockwise)
Installation torque 35-40 Nm
Thread treatment Always apply grease or anti-seize compound

Why are the left and right threads different? This is to prevent the self-tightening effect from pedaling from causing the pedals to loosen automatically. Physics is protecting your safety.

Pedal Lifespan

Usage Frequency Expected Lifespan
Riding 3-4 times per week 2-3 years
Daily commuting 1-2 years
Occasional riding 3-5 years

If pedal bearings can no longer be restored to smooth operation through maintenance, it is time to replace the pedals. Good pedals are the foundation of pedaling efficiency.
