Practical Taper Techniques

The taper is the key to the success or failure of a multi-peak design. Common implementation guidelines:

  • Reduce volume, maintain intensity: Cut the number of sets rather than lowering intensity; each session should still include short high-intensity sets (e.g., 6×25 m sprints)
  • Refine technique: The taper is a good time to fix minor technical issues—training volume is low, so learning efficiency is high
  • Enhance sleep and nutrition: Increase sleep during the taper (8–9 hours per night) and consume adequate carbohydrates
  • Avoid “taper anxiety”: Many swimmers feel they are “losing fitness” due to reduced volume during the taper. This is a normal nervous-system response; do not add training volume because of it

Tools for Monitoring Training Load

  • Training Stress Score (TSS): Calculates intensity × duration for each session to track accumulated fatigue
  • HRV (Heart Rate Variability) monitoring: Measure HRV each morning at rest; a drop in values indicates insufficient recovery and signals a need to reduce training volume
  • Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) log: Record a 1–10 fatigue score after each session; if it stays above 8 for three consecutive days, schedule a recovery day

Practical Recommendations

  • Before the season begins, identify all important competition dates and work backward to plan each mesocycle
  • If two major competitions are fewer than 4 weeks apart, consider downgrading one to a B-priority race without a full taper
  • For younger swimmers (under 16), shorten the taper to 7–10 days, as they recover faster
  • After each peak, conduct a self-assessment: which training elements worked? What needs adjustment in the next cycle?
