The Importance of Rear Lights
The rear light is more important than the front light! Because vehicles approaching from behind cannot predict your presence.
- Use flashing mode—it is more noticeable than steady mode
- A red rear light is required by law
- Mount it on the seatpost or under the saddle, and make sure it isn’t blocked by a saddlebag

- Riverside bike path lighting is often insufficient; bring a front light bright enough for your needs
- Mountain roads have almost no streetlights; ensure your front light’s runtime exceeds 1.5 times your estimated riding time
- Visibility is extremely low on rainy night rides; turn both front and rear lights to maximum brightness plus flashing
- A reflective vest or reflective strips are an extra safety bonus
