Build Phase (March to May, Spring)

Taiwan’s spring is the golden period for beginning preparation for the summer racing season:

  • Sweet Spot training: 2–3 sessions per week, 2 × 20 minutes
  • Transitional anaerobic training: 1–2 sessions per week, 30 seconds × 6–8 reps
  • Long ride maintenance: 2–3 hour long ride each week
  • Group practice: Join weekend group rides to accumulate pack-riding skills

  • Separate long rides and sprint days: avoid doing sprint sets after a long ride on the same day
  • Integrate only in the latter half of the build phase: after a strong aerobic foundation is established (around week 8), introduce combined “aerobic-then-sprint” training

Practical Recommendations

  1. Use TSB (Training Stress Balance) to track body status: Monitor training load and fatigue through platforms such as TrainingPeaks, and ensure TSB (fitness state value) is positive before important races.
  2. Taper significantly 2 weeks before races: Peak sprint performance requires a “fresh” neuromuscular system; tapering allows training adaptations to fully manifest.
  3. Adjust flexibly: A periodized plan is a guideline, not a rigid template. If an important race opportunity arises, you can flexibly enter the peak phase earlier.
  4. Align with Taiwan’s race calendar: Schedule peak periods to align with target events (such as the KOM Challenge, road league races, and county/city championships) so that peak form arrives precisely at key races.
