  • Aerobic endurance as the priority (Z2 comprises 50–60%)
  • Beginning to introduce Z3 threshold work (comprising 20–30%)
  • Continued technical refinement (technique work comprises 20–25%)
  • Total training volume 2500–3500m per session

Group C (Foundation Group): Building Technique and Aerobic Capacity Together

Many open swim sessions at Taiwan’s public pools have no grouping concept, with swimmers of all speeds sharing the same lane.

Solution: Self-directed swimmers can choose off-peak hours, when swimmers of similar speed naturally gather in the fast lane; alternatively, join a coach-led swim club that offers a group training environment.

Criteria for Promotion and Demotion

Establish clear promotion and demotion criteria so swimmers have goals to work toward:

  • Promotion criteria: For 3 consecutive weeks, the final repeat in the current group’s workout still exceeds the group’s pace standard by 5%
  • Demotion criteria: Workout completion rate below 60% for 2 consecutive weeks (unable to meet minimum pace requirements on every repeat)
  • Temporary adjustment: If fatigue, illness, or special circumstances arise on a given day, swimmers may temporarily drop one group without a formal reclassification

Practical Recommendations

  1. Conduct testing once per season (400m + 200m) to update grouping criteria, ensuring groups reflect current ability.
  2. Coaches should rotate through all lanes during group sessions, rather than focusing only on Group A—technical development in Group C is equally important.
  3. Encourage paired training within groups: two swimmers in the same group alternate leading, observing each other’s pace to improve pace awareness.
  4. Design “all-group workout sessions”: schedule one combined training session per month (e.g., technique day or recovery day) to strengthen team cohesion.
  5. Track each swimmer’s performance trends—group adjustments based on data rather than subjective impressions are more persuasive.
