The Basic Logic Behind Two-a-Day Training

Practical Adjustments for the Taiwanese Context

Professional athletes and university swim teams in Taiwan commonly follow a two-a-day system, but for the general public, two-a-day training presents greater challenges:

  • Pool access time limits: The main two-a-day time windows in Taiwanese public pools are the morning session (typically 6:00–7:30) and the evening session (17:00–20:30)
  • Work pressure and sleep deprivation: If 7.5–8 hours of sleep cannot be guaranteed, forcing two-a-day training is not recommended—its benefits are far outweighed by a single session with full recovery
  • Monthly or per-visit fees: Some swim clubs offer unlimited monthly membership plans, which suit a two-a-day schedule

Recommendation: Recreational athletes should start with 2–3 two-a-day sessions per week (with single sessions on the remaining days), rather than training twice daily every day, to reduce the risk of excessive fatigue.

Periodization of Two-a-Day Training

A suggested structure for an 8-week two-a-day training cycle:

  • Weeks 1–2: 2 two-a-day sessions per week to adapt to the recovery demands between sessions
  • Weeks 3–5: 4–5 two-a-day sessions per week, increasing training volume toward the target peak
  • Week 6: Slight volume reduction (decrease by 20–25%) to allow for supercompensation
  • Week 7: Optional race or testing
  • Week 8: Recovery week, returning to 3–4 single sessions per week

Practical Recommendations

  1. Establish a stable single-session base before introducing two-a-day training: Ensure you reach 25,000–30,000m per week with single daily sessions before attempting two-a-day training.
  2. Track resting heart rate: Measure your resting heart rate every morning upon waking; if it is 5–8 bpm above baseline for 3 consecutive days, reduce the number of two-a-day sessions or lower intensity.
  3. Finish the evening session no later than 21:00: It takes 2–3 hours after training to fall asleep effectively; otherwise, the quality of the next morning’s session will be compromised.
  4. Use different strokes for the two sessions: For example, freestyle endurance in the morning and backstroke or breaststroke as the main stroke in the evening, to reduce the risk of overuse injuries from repetitive movements.
  5. Hold firm to the recovery day principle: Take at least one full rest day per week (no swimming) to allow the body to complete a full supercompensation cycle.
