Introduction

Swim training is typically periodized: starting with technique and aerobic endurance in the General Preparation Phase, gradually transitioning to high-intensity speed work in the Specific Preparation Phase, and finally entering the Competition Phase.

However, this transition is not as simple as “technique one week, all-out sprints the next.” If the switch is too abrupt, the sound movement patterns built during the technique phase often collapse within the first week of increased intensity. Transition Sessions are designed precisely to ensure that technical advantages are fully preserved and converted as intensity rises.

Why Are Transition Sessions Necessary?

There is a key physiological contradiction between technique training and race-pace training:

  • Technique training is performed at low intensity: movement is precise, neuromuscular control is clear, but speed is slow
  • Race-pace training is performed at high intensity: speed is fast, but fatigue leads to compensatory movement patterns

Without a transition period, once swimmers enter race-pace training, their technique quickly reverts to old habits under fatigue, and the gains from the technique phase are largely diminished.

The goal of transition sessions is to allow technique and speed to improve in tandem as intensity gradually increases, rather than working against each other.

Duration of the Transition Period

The length of the transition period depends on the training phase and the depth of technical changes:

  • Introduce short sprint sets (50m) to observe whether technique remains stable at faster speeds
  • Begin incorporating lactate threshold work (short Z3 intervals)
Sample session (Week 2):
Warm-up: 600m (including 4 × 50m build-up)
Technique set: 4 × 50m (one technical focus per repeat), 15 sec rest
Main set: 4 × 300m, Z2–Z3 pace, 25 sec rest
Speed set: 6 × 50m, Z3–Z4 pace, emphasizing technique maintenance, 30 sec rest

Week 3 (Technique Integration)

Session structure: Technique 15% + Aerobic Endurance 35% + Speed 50%

Design focus:

  • The technique set is now only part of the warm-up, no longer the main focus
  • The speed set increases to Z4, observing technique stability in near-anaerobic conditions
  • Introduce speed endurance sets (such as Broken Swims or overload sets)
Sample session (Week 3):
Warm-up: 400m + 4 × 50m technique activation
Main set: 8 × 100m, Z3–Z4, send-off every 2:30 (fixed departure interval)
Speed set: 6 × 50m, Z4–Z5, 45 sec rest
Cool-down: 400m (including 4 × 50m technique review)

Monitoring Technique During the Transition

Throughout the transition period, it is essential to continuously monitor whether technique remains stable as speed increases. Here are several practical monitoring methods:

Method 1: Stroke Count Monitoring

Once a week, record stroke count over the same distance (25m or 50m). If speed improves without an increase in stroke count, it means “greater distance per stroke” (improved technical efficiency); if stroke count rises sharply with speed, it indicates reliance on stroke rate rather than technical efficiency at higher speeds.

Method 2: Self-Assessment Technique Checklist

After each session, answer 3 technique questions:

  • Does the hand entry point cross the midline? (Yes → technique regression)
  • Does the rotation amplitude shrink as speed increases? (Yes → needs reinforcement)
  • Is the kick rhythm stable? (Unstable → core fatigue, adjust training volume)

Method 3: Regular Video Recording

Record underwater video every 2–3 weeks to directly compare technique before and after the transition. This is the most effective method but requires equipment.

Common Transition Problems and Solutions

Problem 1: Hand Entry Crosses Over as Soon as Speed Increases

Cause: Shoulder rotator cuff fatigue, or the high-elbow entry cannot be maintained at a faster stroke rate

Solution: Reduce the number of repeats in this week’s speed set (by 20–30%), increase the proportion of Single Arm Drills, and focus on improving the hand entry path at high speed

Problem 2: Technique Is “Forgotten” After Z4 Training

Cause: Lactate accumulation inhibits neuromuscular precision; this is a normal physiological response

Solution: After each high-intensity set, schedule a 4 × 25m technique recovery set (allowing the brain to rediscover correct movement patterns under fatigue) rather than moving directly into the next high-intensity set

Problem 3: Transition Period Too Short, Technique Collapses During Race Pace

Cause: Insufficient time between the technique phase and the race-pace phase

Solution: Return to the Week 2 session structure and gradually increase the proportion of speed work over a 2-week period

Practical Recommendations

  1. Do not skip the transition period: Rushing into race-pace training is the most common session-design mistake, sacrificing weeks of investment from the technique phase.
  2. During the transition, speed sets should prioritize “conscious fast swimming” rather than “hard sprinting”—the former maintains technique, while the latter typically leads to compensation.
  3. Use stroke count as an objective metric: as speed increases each repeat, confirm that stroke count remains within a reasonable range.
  4. Retain 15% technique training after the transition period: technique sets during the race-pace phase are key to preventing technical regression.
  5. Communicate the transition pace with your coach: if you train independently, use the transition week framework in this article as a reference and adjust the progression based on your individual response.
