Bicycle Freehub/Cassette Removal Guide: Essential Skills for Swapping Cassettes and Cleaning the Hub

裝備介紹

Two Tools Handle Everything

Cassette removal requires two dedicated tools: a cassette lockring tool and a chain whip. Beyond that, no other special equipment is needed.

Tools You’ll Need

Tool Purpose Price
Cassette lockring tool Engages the lockring NT$200-400
Chain whip Holds the cassette to prevent it from turning NT$200-400
Adjustable wrench or spanner Turns the lockring tool Already own one

Removal Steps

  1. Remove the rear wheel
  2. Remove the quick release or thru-axle
  3. Insert the lockring tool into the lockring (the ring at the center of the cassette)
  4. Wrap the chain whip around the cassette’s largest cog to keep the cassette from spinning
  5. Turn the lockring tool counterclockwise with the adjustable wrench
  6. Once the lockring loosens, unscrew it by hand
  7. Lift the entire cassette off

Note: The initial breakaway can require a lot of force. You can lay the wheel on the ground, hold the chain whip down with your foot, and use both hands to turn the lockring tool.

Installation Steps

  1. Confirm the hub’s driver body is clean and greased
  2. The cassette has an anti-error design (one spline is narrower than the rest)—align it and slide it on
  3. Thread the lockring on by hand
  4. Tighten with the lockring tool (torque roughly 30-50 Nm)
  5. No chain whip needed for installation (the tightening direction matches the direction the cassette freely spins)

Differences Between Systems

System Removal Method
Shimano HG Standard lockring + chain whip
SRAM XD/XDR No lockring—the cassette body threads directly off
Campagnolo Similar to HG but with a different lockring spec

SRAM XD/XDR systems don’t need a chain whip or lockring tool—the cassette simply unscrews from the driver body, making it even simpler.

When to Remove the Cassette

Purpose Frequency
Deep-clean the cassette Every 3 months
Clean the hub’s driver body Every 6 months
Replace the cassette When worn
Replace spokes When a spoke breaks on the cassette side

Benefits of Cleaning the Cassette

Once the cassette is off, you can:

  • Clean the grime between every cog (with a toothbrush and degreaser)
  • Clean dirt off the hub’s driver body
  • Apply fresh grease to the driver body
  • Inspect the cogs for wear

Once you’ve mastered cassette removal, your drivetrain cleaning can go far deeper. It’s the key skill that takes you from “surface cleaning” to “deep cleaning.”
