A Serious Warning About Contact Lenses and Swimming

Ophthalmologists strongly advise against swimming while wearing regular soft or hard contact lenses, for the following reasons:

  • Pool water — and natural bodies of water, which carry even greater risk — can contain Acanthamoeba, a protozoan that can multiply in the space between a contact lens and the cornea, causing an extremely difficult-to-treat form of keratitis that can lead to blindness in severe cases
  • Contact lenses absorb chlorine compounds and microorganisms from pool water, prolonging the cornea’s exposure to them
  • Unless vision correction is essential, prescription goggles are recommended; if there is a specific need, daily disposable contact lenses combined with well-sealed goggles may be considered (this remains a high-risk practice that requires personal judgment)

Practical Recommendations

  • Using 1–2 drops of preservative-free artificial tears immediately after each swim is the simplest and most effective form of eye care.
  • Replace goggles regularly: fogged or scratched lenses impair vision, and aging gaskets lose their seal; replacement every 6–12 months is recommended.
  • Outdoor swimmers (such as those competing in open-water events) should choose goggles with UV400 coating and consider using soothing artificial tears after every training session.
  • Swimmers with chronic dry eye or who wear corrective lenses for high myopia should consult an ophthalmologist before starting a swimming program to determine whether special eye care measures are needed.
