What Are You Drinking?
An unsettling fact: according to multiple studies, a sports bottle that hasn’t been deep-cleaned for a week can harbor more bacteria than a household toilet seat.
In Taiwan’s hot and humid environment, this problem is even more severe.
Bottle Hygiene Issues

Bottle Cleaning SOP
After Every Ride
- Pour out any remaining liquid
- Rinse the bottle body and cap with clean water
- Open the cap and let it air dry (don’t store it with the cap closed!)
Weekly Deep Cleaning
- Soak in warm water + baking soda for 30 minutes
- Scrub the inside of the bottle with a bottle brush
- Disassemble and clean the cap (especially the bite valve and mechanism)
- Rinse thoroughly
- Turn upside down to dry
Monthly Sanitizing
- Method 1: Soak in diluted bleach for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly
- Method 2: Soak overnight in white vinegar + baking soda
- Method 3: Use dedicated bottle cleaning tablets
When to Replace Your Bottle

Bottle Cage Maintenance

Bottle cage screws (usually M5) are recommended at 3-4 Nm torque. Too tight can damage the screw holes on a carbon frame.
Special Notes for Taiwan
- In summer, water in your bottle can become a warm breeding ground within 2 hours
- Sugary sports drinks breed bacteria more easily than plain water
- Recommended: one bottle for water, one bottle for sports drink
- Always pour out leftovers after a ride—don’t leave it until tomorrow
