Cycling Winter Maintenance Special: Strategies for Taiwan's Humid and Cold Northern Weather

裝備介紹

Winter in Northern Taiwan Is Hard on Your Bike

If you live in Taipei, Keelung, or the mountainous areas of New Taipei City, you know exactly how damp and cold winter can be. Weeks of continuous drizzle, punctuated by occasional cold snaps, leave everything feeling moist. Your bike is no exception.

Key Winter Maintenance Points

Item Notes
Double the lubrication frequency With high humidity, wipe the chain after every ride
Use wet lube More water-resistant than dry lube
Extra attention to bearings Moisture can seep in easily
Cable housing waterproofing Apply silicone grease at cable entry/exit points
Indoor storage Use with a dehumidifier

Cycling Gear Maintenance

It’s not just the bike that needs care in winter—your riding gear needs attention too:

Gear Maintenance Method
Windbreaker/Rain jacket Hang to dry after use; don’t ball it up
Shoe covers Remove and dry immediately after riding
Gloves Wash regularly and dry completely
Cycling shoes Remove insoles to dry; stuff shoes with newspaper to absorb moisture
Helmet Remove and wash the inner padding

Storage Recommendations If Not Riding in Winter

If you plan to take a break from cycling during winter:

  1. Do a full clean and service
  2. Apply a thicker layer of lube on the chain (as a protective coating)
  3. Inflate tires to the recommended pressure (to prevent deformation)
  4. Slightly loosen and re-torque bolts on carbon fiber components (to relieve stress)
  5. Store indoors in a dry place, using a dehumidifier
  6. Rotate the wheels and crankset a few times each month (to prevent bearings from seizing)
  7. Check tire pressure monthly and top up as needed

Pre-Season Return Checklist

Before you get back on the bike in spring:

  1. Do a full visual inspection of the bike
  2. Inflate tires to the correct pressure
  3. Test brake power
  4. Test that shifting is smooth
  5. Clean the chain and re-lube
  6. Check torque on all bolts
  7. Take a short test ride of 5-10 km

North vs. South Differences

Item North (Taipei) South (Kaohsiung)
Winter temperature 10-18°C 15-25°C
Humidity Extremely high (80%+) Moderate
Rainfall Frequent Less frequent
Maintenance frequency Needs to be doubled Normal is fine
Rust prevention priority Highest priority General attention

Cyclists in northern Taiwan need to spend roughly 50% more time on maintenance than their southern counterparts. This is determined by geography and can’t be changed—but you can cope with it using the right maintenance practices.
