The Art of Fine-Tuning
Professional bike fitting is certainly important, but you can actually handle everyday fine-tuning yourself. Below are the most common adjustment items and methods.
Stem Length
Stem length directly affects your “drop” and how far you reach with your arms.
| Length | Suitable For | Feel |
|---|---|---|
| 70-80mm | Short stem | Responsive handling, more upright upper body |
| 90-100mm | Standard | Balanced handling and stability |
| 110-130mm | Long stem | Aero position, high stability |
How to tell if your stem is too long or too short:
- Arms fully extended while riding → stem is too long
- Elbow bend angle too large while riding (over 90 degrees) → stem is too short
- Ideal state: elbows naturally bent at about 15-20 degrees
Spacer Height
The spacers below the stem control your handlebar height.
| More spacers | Higher handlebar | More upright, comfortable position |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer spacers | Lower handlebar | More aero, better aerodynamics |
Safety note: At least 3-5mm of the carbon fork’s steerer tube must remain visible above the stem, otherwise the stem may crush the steerer tube.
Stem Angle
Most stems have an angle of -6° to -17°. Flipping the stem can change handlebar height:
- Standard installation (angle pointing down) → lower handlebar
- Flipped installation (angle pointing up) → higher handlebar
Drop Bar Position Adjustment
If you rarely use the drops, the angle of the drop bars may be incorrect:
- The ends of the drops should be roughly horizontal or slightly angled downward
- The hoods of the shifters should allow your wrists to stay in a natural position
Cleat Position
The fore-aft position and angle of your cleats affect your knee tracking:
| Position | Effect |
|---|---|
| Too far forward | Increased strain on calf muscles |
| Too far back | Poor ankle stability |
| Incorrect angle | Pain on the inside or outside of the knee |
Basic principle: The center of the cleat should be approximately at the front third of the foot (at the metatarsal heads).
When Should You Get a Professional Fitting?
- You’ve adjusted things yourself but still feel uncomfortable
- Persistent knee, lower back, or neck pain
- You want to optimize your pedaling efficiency
- After buying a new bike or major components
Fitting fees in Taiwan range from about NT$2,000-5,000, and Giant and Merida flagship stores typically offer this service.
Fine-tuning doesn’t require spending a lot of money, but it does require patience. Change only one variable at a time, ride for a few days, and then reassess to find the setup that works best for you.
